    • A process for production of high-purity bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate, which comprises the step (1) of esterifying crude terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol and/or ethylene oxide to obtain a reaction product containing bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate, the step (2) of converting the reaction product formed in the step (1) into a solution of bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate (solute) in ethylene glycol (solvent), if necessary, with additional ethylene glycol, and then removing ions from the solution to form a deionized solution, the step (3) of distilling the deionized solution formed in the step (2) to recover crude bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate with low-boiling matter distilled away, and the step (4) of subjecting the crude bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate obtained in the step (3) to molecular distillation to recover bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate as distillate.

    • A method which comprises heating an aromatic polyester together with bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate and/or low condensates thereof to conduct predecomposition, and reacting the predecomposition mixture with ethylene glycol to convert the terephthalic acid components contained in the mixture into bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate and/or low condensates thereof; a method which comprises bringing the solution composition obtained by the above process into contact with a cation exchanger and/or an anion exchanger to thereby obtain bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate lowered in ion content; and a method which comprises subjecting a bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate containing mixture lowered in ion content to preliminary evaporation or distillation to thereby distill away low-boiling compounds, and subjecting the resulting mixture to evaporation or distillation in vacuo to thereby obtain pure bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate having a total content of cations and anions of 15 ppm or below.
