    • A well pipe handling machine (10) for removing a series of stands (23) of pipe from the upper end of a well pipe string and storing the stands (23) in a rack (24) offset to a side of the well axis and/or returning the stands (23) sequentially from the rack (24) for reconnection to the string. The machine (10) includes a support which carries means for holding a pipe in vertical condition and is movable between a position in which the pipe is in alignment with the well axis and a location near the storage rack (24), and which preferably takes the form of a vertically extending column structure (31) movable horizontally by two synchronized drive mechanisms (43) at the top and bottom of the column structure (31). The pipe holding means are desirably shiftable upwardly and downwardly relative to the support and also generally horizontally toward and away from the support for placement of the pipe stands (23) in the rack (24) and removal therefrom. The pipe holding means may include two vertically spaced pipe gripping units (38, 39) mounted by a parallelogram mechanism (35) for movement toward and away from the support. A control station (42) for carrying an operator and having controls for operating the machine is mounted to said support column structure (31) for movement therewith.

    • A wrench assembly for making and breaking connections between tubular members, such as a drill string and a top drive sub. The wrench assembly consists of a lower wrench (33) and an upper wrench (31). The lower wrench (33) has a curved gate arm (41) and a curved latch arm (43) pivotable between an open position and a closed position. The gate arm (41) has a plurality of teeth on its outer surface, and the latch arm (43) has a plurality of teeth on its inner surface, for locking engagement with the teeth on the gate arm (41). The lower wrench (33) also has a clamping cylinder (61) and a die block (59) for forcing the tubular member against the gate arm (41). The upper wrench (31), mounted above the lower wrench (33), has a semicircular plate (65). At least one spline (67) is mounted on the interior surface of the semicircular plate (59) for engagement with at least one spline on the top drive sub. A fluid cylinder (71) is provided for applying torque to the wrenches to rotate one of the wrenches with respect to the other wrenches.

    • A rigid connection for joining two piles which are to be driven into an earth formation, with the connection preferably including a box section (22) having a tapering internal surface (56) and a pin section (21) having a tapering external surface (32), a locking member (23) carried by the box section and actuable into engagement with the pin section in a relation retaining the sections against axial separation and holding them tightly together, and a stabbing end portion (46) on the pin section (21) which is adapted to extend through a minimum diameter portion of the box section (22) in a condition in which the axes of the two sections are disposed at an angle to one another, enabling the two sections to be easily stabbed axially together in a non-aligned condition and then by virtue of the stabbing end portion (46) and the tapering surfaces (32, 56) automatically deflect one another into properly aligned condition as the sections move progressively closer together. The locking member (23) may be tightened inwardly against the pin section by an actuating element (71) connected threadedly to the box member (22) in a relation enabling removal of the actuating element and certain other related parts laterally outwardly to the exterior of the box section while the pin and box sections remain attached together. A holding structure retains the actuating element against loosening rotation in the fully madeup condition of the joint.

Preferably, two such machines (28, 31) are provided for shifting pipes (13) on two storage decks (12, 22) at different levels, and for delivering pipes (19) to or from an intermediate conveyor system (25, 128) extending between the two decks (12, 22).
