    • A three-point passenger restraint system for a passenger seat including a lap belt (101) having a first end connected to a lap belt retractor and a second end. A torso belt (102) having a first end connected to the second end of the lap belt and a second end. The second end of the torso belt is attached to an anchor arm (140) that is pivotally mounted to a passenger seat or vehicle side structure, wherein the anchor arm (140) is rotationally biased to remove slack in the torso belt (102). The anchor arm (140) rotates and thus functions (i) as the upper height adjusting anchor point for the three-point restraining system and (ii) to adjust belt length to comfortably accomodate passenger sizes in the range of a 5th percentile female to a 95th percentile male.

    • A restraint assembly (40) includes an inflator (34) for generating inflation gas. The restraint assembly (40) includes an upper cushion portion (50) and an inflatable stiffening device (42) extending generally longitudinally across a lower edge of the cushion portion (50) for providing longitudinal tension and lateral stability to the restraint assembly. Preferably, the stiffening device (42) is tubular. Also preferably, the restraint assembly includes a tensioning device (28) which at least partially surrounds the stiffening device (42) and places longitudinal tension on the stiffening device when inflated. The tensioning (28) may take the form of a strap or cord that is spiral-wrapped around the stiffening device. The stiffening device preferably includes an inboard stiffening wall (43) and an outboard stiffening wall (44). The tensioning device (28') may preferably be zig-zag wrapped back and forth across the outboard wall (44') of the stiffening device (42') for preventing occupant interaction with the tensioning device (28') on the inboard side of the stiffening device (42'). For either of the zig-zag or spiral wraps, the stiffening device (42) includes upper and lower edge portions (81, 82) and the tensioning device (28) alternately passes through the upper and lower edge portions (81, 82).

    • A leg assembly (22) for mounting passenger seats in transport vehicles especially configured to absorb energy, in the event of a survivable crash or other sudden deceleration. The seat legs deform in a controlled manner to prevent loads at its floor attachment points from exceeding the magnitude of allowable floor strength. The leg assembly includes a base member (30) whose forward and rear ends attach to the floor, and a V-leg (40) whose lower vertex pivots about an axis passing through the front of the base member in the event of a forward crash. The V-leg has a vertical member (40v) and a diagonal member (40d). A load-limiting strut (36) connects the rear end of the base member to an intermediate area on the diagonal member of the V-leg. A tension link (38) connects the intermediate area of the V-leg and to the upper end of the vertical member of the V-leg. Elongation of the load-limiting strut allows the seat and legs to pitch forward at a predetermined inertial loading which, if exceeded substantially, would rip the seat loose from the floor. The tension link elongates at a predetermined load to distribute the loads within the seat.
