摘要： A vulcanizable rubber composition comprises (a) a rubber component; (b) a methylene donor compound; and (c) a methylene acceptor comprising a blend of a high ortho-ortho bonded phenolic novolak resin and a resorcinolic resin. The resin blend can be made by a number of methods. For example, it can be prepared by first reacting one or more phenolic compounds represented by the following formula: where R is selected from the group consisting of H, an alkyl group of 1-16 carbon atoms and an aralkyl group of 8-12 carbon atoms with an aldehyde in the presence of an ortho directing catalyst and then combining a resorcinol-formaldehyde novolak resin to obtain a phenolic and resorcinolic novolak resin blend.

摘要： A curable substituted resorcinol-based epoxy resin was developed having structural formula (I), wherein at least one of R1, R2 or R3 is selected from the group consisting of (a) hydrogen, (b) halogen, (c) a saturated hydrocarbon having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, (d) an unsaturated hydrocarbon having 1 to about 10 carbon atoms, (e) an aralkyl group, and (f) a benzoyl group. The aralkyl group has structure (II), wherein at least one of R4, R5 or R6 is selected from the group consisting of (a) hydrogen, (b) an alkyl group having 1 to about 4 carbon atoms and (c) halogen. The benzoyl group has structure (III), wherein R7 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen and an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. Another curable substituted resorcinol-based epoxy resin was developed having general structural formula (IV), wherein at least one of R8, R9, R10 or R11 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogens and alkyl groups having 1 to about 10 carbon atoms. To minimize potential toxicity, the above derivatized resorcinol epoxies were synthesized, along with a series of thermoplastic tougheners. The physical and mechanical properties of the neat resins and of the toughened resins are presented in this patent.

摘要： A modified phenolic novolak resin is prepared by reacting a phenolic compound (e.g., resorcinol) with an aliphatic polyol. The reaction mixture further reacts with a formaldehyde to produce a modified phenolic novolak resin. The reaction is typically carried out in the presence of an acid or a base catalyst. The resulting resin is characterized by a relatively low level of free resorcinol; and rubber compounds containing the resin exhibit low fuming, lower Mooney viscosity (which means better processing), better dynamic stiffness properties (G'), and/or good tear properties. Therefore, the resulting resin can be used as a methylene acceptor compound in a vulcanizable rubber composition.
