    • A multilayer circuit board system or laminated circuit board system (10) for use in a motor controller includes a motherboard (62, 2200), at least one power substrate circuit board (201, 2600), and a capacitor circuit board (60, 2400). The power substrate module (201, 2600) includes a mounting area (69) provided in a recess (75), window or portion of the circuit board (201, 2600) where the circuit board is only a single layer thick. The single circuit board layer (201, 2600) at the mounting area (69) provides a heat conductive yet highly electrically insulated mounting area (69) for receiving a heat sink (302). The heat sink (302) can be mounted on a side opposite the electrical device. The capacitor circuit board (60, 2400), power substrate circuit board (201, 2600), and mother circuit board (62, 2200) are interconnected without the use of external connectors or wires. A flexible circuit board layer or SCM™ interconnect interface (240) allows the circuit boards to be connected solely by printed circuit (PC) wires.

    • A photoelectric control unit including an electronic system having a system architecture which is adapted for allowing the unit to readily and accurately determine its own operating margin. This architecture system includes a pair of variable gain modules (74,84) which operate in conjunction with a pair of separate signal channels. The signal channels have comparators (90,94) for comparing signal amplitudes on their respective channels with a common reference level. Operating margin values are determined by varying the gain of the amplification modules and tracking the output from the comparators on the signal channels. The photoelectric control unit can then use operating margin values to automatically set the system gain and thereby adjust the sensitivity of the unit for optimum performance.

    • A programmable controller is customized for a specific application by a function card (30) inserted into a socket of a processor module (20) on the controller. The function card (30) can perform one or more tasks and may be used with different types of programmable controllers. Before the card (30) can be used by a given programmable controller an initialization procedure must be performed to determine if the processor module (20) and the card (30) are compatible. As part of this procedure information about the operation of the given programmable controller is sent to the card (30). The card (30) also contains functional information for each of its tasks the card (30) provides. The functional information is sent to the processor module (20) during the initialization procedure to enable the module (20) to utilize the card (30).
