    • A method of recovering or increasing the recovery of oil and/or gas from an underground formation involving injecting into the formation, preferably in the form of an aqueous solution, at least one mono alkyl ether of polyethylene glycol in which the alkyl group has 3-5 carbons and the polyethylene glycol contains 3-6 ethylene oxy units e.g. butyl ether of triethylene glycol. Especially preferred are mixtures comprising that and at least one mono alkyl ether of mono or di ethylene glycol e.g. a mixture of butyl triglycol ether, butyl tetraglycol ether, butyl pentaglycol ether and butyl diglycol ether. The method of the invention may be applied to well stimulation treatments such as water blocking, sand consolidation, sandstone acidising and methods of increasing the recovery of oil such as tertiary oil recovery.

    • This invention relates to a treated pillared clay made by the process comprising the steps of:

      (A) contacting at least one clay with an effective amount of at least one ammonium ion source to exchange sodium and/or calcium ions in said clay for ammonium ions to provide an ammonium-containing clay, said clay comprising metal oxides and hydroxides and having a lamellar structure with lamellar layers and interlamellar spaces disposed between the lamellar layers and exchangeable sodium and/or calcium ions occupying said interlamellar spaces;
      (B) contacting said ammonium-containing clay with an effective amount of at least one source of fluorine to replace at least part of the hydroxyl groups in said clay with fluorine to provide a fluorine- and ammonium-containing clay;
      (C) contacting said fluorine- and ammonium-containing clay with an effective amount of at least one pillaring agent to form a fluorine-containing pillared clay; and
      (D) contacting said fluorine-containing pillared clay with an effective amount of at least one inorganic acid to impregnate and/or incorporate at least part of said acid on said clay.

      This invention also relates to a process for making the foregoing treated pillared clays. This invention also relates to the use of these treated pillared clays as alkylation catalysts.

    • This invention relates to a method of cracking polymers, especially waste hydrocarbon polymers to produce products of lower molecular weight. The process comprises feeding the polymer into a processing chamber or circular-cross section which chamber also has a bed of particulate material maintained in suspension and in toroidal shape by a hot gas introduced into said chamber so that the polymer intermingles with the particulate materials of the bed and is cracked into products of lower molecular weight. The invention is useful for converting polymeric wastes into products of commercial value such as eg waxes, lubricants and monomeric olefins at the same time reducing environmental pollution.
