摘要： Synthetic polymer-based carrier vehicles for delivery of nucleic acid material to target cells in biological systems are made by self-assembly of the nucleic acid with cationic polymer material so as to condense the nucleic acid and form a polyelectrolyte complex. This complex is then reacted with reactive hydrophilic polymer material which bonds to the complex forming a hydrophilic coating that stabilises the complex and provides an outer protective steric shield. These carrier vehicles can be useful in gene therapy.

摘要： A range is disclosed of benzimidazole-4-carboxamide compounds (I) which can act as potent inhibitors of the DNA repair enzyme poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase or PARP enzyme (EC 2.4.2.30), and which thereby can provide useful therapeutic compounds for use in conjunction with DNA-damaging cytotoxic drugs or radiotherapy to potentiate the effects of the latter. In formula (I), R and R' may each be selected independently from hydrogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl (e.g. CH2CH2OH), acyl (e.g. acetyl or benzoyl) or an optionally substituted aryl (e.g. phenyl) or aralkyl (e.g. benzyl or carboxybenzyl) group. R is generally a substituted phenyl group in the most preferred compounds. The compounds may also be used in the form of pharmaceutically acceptable salts or pro-drugs.

摘要： A method of filtering solids from the effluent from a wastewater collection container such as a septic tank is disclosed. A mesh screen filter is immersed in wastewater having a concentration of waste solids which have been allowed to distribute into a scum layer and a sludge layer with a horizontal layer of liquid therebetween. The filter is surrounded with a housing, and the interior surface of the housing is exposed to the horizontal layer of liquid through a plurality of apertures in the housing. Liquid from the horizontal layer flows through the apertures into the housing and thereafter the liquid flows from one side of the filter to an opposite side thereof through a mesh screen filtering surface area greater than the interior surface area of the housing. Thereafter, the liquid flows through a liquid effluent outlet of the container. This filter is very efficient and consequently provides a high quality effluent, while resisting clogging and resultant collapse of the mesh screen surface area.

摘要： Oligosaccharides having a high specific binding affinity for FGF growth factors and made up of less than ten disaccharide units in all are disclosed which include sulphated disaccharide units composed of an N-sulphated glucosamine residue and a 2-0-sulphated iduronic acid residue. A method is also disclosed for preparing these oligosaccharides in a purified and relatively homogeneous state from glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulphate. For the best FGF-binding affinity there are preferably at least four of the sulphated disaccharide units arranged as an internal contiguous sequence. The most favoured structures contain fourteen monosaccharide residues in all, but structures having twelve monosaccharide residues can also have quite high FGF-binding affinity, at least for bFGF. These oligosaccharides can either activate and stimulate FGF activity or inhibit FGF activity, and uses thereof as drugs for therapeutic purposes in medicine are also disclosed.

摘要： Un procédé et appareil pour enlever en série la première plaque d'une pile de plaques se caractérise par la rotation d'un transporteur cylindrique (10) ayant un segment à la corde (14) défini à sa périphérie, la pile de plaques étant orientée de sorte que la première plaque (22') est tangentiellement adjacente à la périphérie du transporteur. Une soupape d'air interrompt alors temporairement le vide, en permettant à la plaque de se dégager du transporteur. Un mécanisme d'avance (52) fait avancer la pile d'une épaisseur de plaque pendant chaque rotation du transporteur afin de placer la plaque suivante en contact avec le transporteur après que chaque plaque a été enlevée.
