    • Methods of operation for data reader and security tag deactivation system (10) whereby a data reader is equipped with EAS deactivation coils/modules (14) disposed in the vicinity of the read volume or generally proximate thereto. System (10) is operable to permit reading of the ID tag (5) on an item, and upon a successful read, the deactivation unit (12) is operable to (1) sense presence of an EAS tag (5); (2) if presence of EAS tag (5) is sensed, energize the deactivation coil/module (14) to deactivate the EAS tag (5); (3) sense if EAS tag (5) is deactivated. If EAS tag (5) is sensed to have been deactivated, the system signals and next item is scanned. Also, it may be operable to urge the operator to return an item to the read volume to enhance EAS tag deactivation, one method being by delaying good read acknowledgment until determining that the EAS tag (5) which may have been previously detected has subsequently been deactivated.

    • An antitheft system having a high accuracy without performing erroneous recognition due to an external disturbing noise similar to a warning sound generated by a BGM and noise in a store. The antitheft system includes a warning unit which is connected to an antitheft object and generates a warning sound of a predetermined frequency for an unauthorized act and a warning sound detection apparatus for detecting the warning sound of the warning unit and generating a warning signal. The warning sound detection apparatus counts the time of a predetermined number (S2, S5) of waveform pulses of a received sound a plurality of times (S1 to S3, S4 to S6). If the difference between the counted times is within a predetermined time, the apparatus determines that the received sound is a warning sound and generates a warning signal (S7).
