    • A movable water jet edge trimmer (10, 160) has an integral trim chute (28, 142) attached to a cutting support plate (20, 144) for the trimmer (10, 160). The support plate (20, 144) has a cutting aperture (22, 146) and a series of suction apertures (24, 152) located inboard of the outside edge (12) of the travelling web (14, 124) for supporting the web (14, 124) against the support plate (20, 144) as a water jet (44) passes out through the cutting aperture (22, 146) away from the support plate (20, 144) and through the web (14, 124). The support plate (20, 144) has a curved surface (52) located downstream and outboard of the cutting aperture (22, 146) which curves into a trim chute opening (50) of a trim chute (28, 142). Negative pressure is applied from the trim chute (28, 142) to the trim chute opening (50) to draw any strip of material cut from edge (12) of the web (14, 124) over the curved surface (52) and into the trim chute (28, 142). The trim chute opening (50) has a first edge that extends substantially parallel to the direction of the travel of the web (14, 124) and is substantially aligned and slightly inboard of the cutting aperture (22, 146) whereby the trim chute (28, 142) passes into the trim chute opening (50) and a small portion of edge (12) of the web (14, 124) passes over the opening (50) in the trim chute (28, 142). In applications where the web (14, 124) comprises a paper of a lighter basis weight, an additional second support plate (160) is utilized spaced from the first support plate (20, 144) on the opposite side of the web (14, 124) from the first support plate (20, 144) so as to sandwich the web (14, 124) between the two support plates (20, 144 and 160).

    • A directional tail transfer apparatus (10) includes a tray (44) that defines a longitudinal path line (60) extending along the tray (44) overwhich a paper tail (12) to be threaded travels. The longitudinal path line (60) of the tray (44) is positioned adjacent a first section (14) in a papermaking machine (18) where the paper tail (12) exits. The longitudinal path line (60) is aligned with the initial path of movement of the paper tail (12). The tray (44) has with one or more creases(54, 58), which extend across the tray (44) width and bisect the longitudinal path line (60) to effect a natural change in direction of the longitudinal path line (60) through the tray (44). At least one of the creases (54, 58) bisects the longitudinal path line (60) at predetermined angles other than 90 degrees to provide a lateral displacement in the portion of the tray (44) that follows this crease. This one crease allows the paper tail (12) to fold along its width on an angle that is not perpendicular to the natural downstream path of travel of paper tail (12). As a result the paper tail (12) changes direction to follow the tray (44) along the longitudinal path line (60). The fold angle of the creases (54, 58) and lengths of the tray portions (30) are pre-selected to accurately deliver the paper tail (12) to a threading nip (16). The tray (44) further includes an air or gaseous flow source (50, 66, 68) for directing an air-cushioning stream over the tray (44) to pull or draw the paper tail (12) over and along the tray (44) surfaces. The tray (44) is operable at all angles of installation, including an inverted position.

    • A web cutting apparatus (10) for use in a papermaking machine (14) has an elongated support beam (15) that extends across the width of the web (12). The web cutting apparatus (10) utilizes a free spinning hose wheel (42) about which the water jet hose (46) supplying water to a water jet nozzle (26) is guided and stretched. The wheel (42) is mounted for movement with a slower moving carriage (38) along the beam (15) adjacent a faster moving carriage (36) carrying the water jet nozzle (26). The slower moving carriage (38) moves along the beam (15) at speeds which are one half the speeds at which the faster moving carriage (36) moves across the beam (15). During this movement of the second slower moving carriage (38), the wheel (42) reels the hose (46) thereabout to provide a travelling intermediate support for the hose (46). The hose wheel (42) supports the weight of the hose (46) and maintains it in alignment with the faster moving carriage (36) so that less strain and stress is placed on the hose (46) and the ends of the hose (46) connected to the water jet nozzle (26) during movement of the water jet nozzle (26) across the beam (15). The water jet cutting apparatus (10) has a preferred application as a tip cutting device in a reel turn-up application in a papermaking machine (14) when two sets of faster and slower moving carriages (32, 34) are arranged for movement on opposite sides of the support beam (15) to move towards each other in directions transverse to the web (12).
