    • An apparatus for forming paperboard cartons from flat blanks is provided. The carton blanks are fed from a magazine (25) to the face of a forming die (10), a reciprocating plunger (15) is provided to push the blank through the die forming the carton, and an endless conveyor (36) receives the carton after being stripped from the bottom of the die. A servo drive means for the plunger, blank feeder and conveyor are each independently driven by an infinitely variable speed electric motor. A programmable logic controller operates the servo drive means, whereby the plunger, feeder and conveyor can be infinitely varied to fit the forming action desired. The servo means preferably takes the form of a variable speed, electronic servo motor including an encoder and a tachometer feedback. Product sensor means detect product availability and carton sensor means detects carton availability with both sensor means also being controlled by the programmable logic controller.

    • A form, fill and seal packaging machine (10) includes a tube former (12) for forming a film (F) having spaced apart registration marks (R) thereon into a tube (T) around a hollow mandrel (14). A pair of endless belt devices (22) driven by stepping motors (28), located at the sides of the hollow mandrel (14) advances the film (F) through the machine (10). A stripping and sealing apparatus (30) is located beneath the mandrel (14), for stripping product from the area of the film tube (T) to be sealed, and sealing and cutting a filled package (P) from the tube. A photoelectric cell (48) located upstream of the tube former (12) senses the passing of each registration mark (R) as the film (F) is fed. The photoelectric cell (48) is operatively associated with the belt drive (22) and the actuator (42, 44) for the stripper and the sealer through an index controller (50). The index controller (50) deactivates the stepping motors (28). A master controller (45) activates the stripper/sealer actuator (42, 44) at a predetermined point in each packaging cycle. A method of making form, fill and seal packages of constant length includes the steps of intermittent feeding by increments a full length of film (F) having a registration mark (R) at an intermediate point, sensing said registration mark (R) durig the time the film is being fed, counting predetermined feed increments past the registration mark (R) during continued film feeding, and sealing the package (P) at a location identified by reaching the predetermined number of feed increments.

    • A weighing system for making a predetermined weight of a product comprised of individual articles having variable weights by selecting the product stored in a combination of a predetermined number of storage cups (50,52). Quantities of the product having targeted weights are distributed to a plurality of scale-controlled hoppers (32, 34) for accurate weighing. The weighed product is fed from each of the scale controlled hoppers (32, 34) to a plurality of storage cups (50, 52) associated with each of the hoppers (32, 34), and the product weight associated with each storage cup (50, 52) is registered. Specific combinations of storage cups (50, 52) are tested to determine whether the combined product weights therein add to make the desired weight, within acceptable limits. The first combination found to make the weight is used, and the appropriate storage cups (50, 52) are emptied to a container for receiving the product. The appropriate storage cups (50, 52) are refilled from the hoppers (32, 34) and the process repeats. When none of the combinations of the preselected number of storage cups (50, 52) includes a total product wieght within the acceptable limits, the limits are broadened and the cycle repeats. The weighing system includes a programmed microprocessor for controlling operation thereof, for providing the combination to be tested, for calculating the combined weights, and for determining whether the combined weight falls within the acceptable limits. A specific distributor (12) for the product includes a reversing rotating portion (16) for preventing clogging of the product at openings (18, 20) provided for chutes (28) connecting the distributor (14) to the scale-controlled hoppers (32, 34).
