摘要： A file cloning mechanism allows for quickly creating copies (clones) of files within a filesystem, such as when a user makes a copy of a file. In exemplary embodiments, a clone of a source object is at least initially represented by a structure containing references to various elements of the source object (e.g., indirect onodes, direct onodes, and data blocks). Both read-only and mutable clones can be created. The source file and the clone initially share such elements and continue to share unmodified elements as changes are made to the source file or mutable clone. None of the user data blocks or the metadata blocks describing the data stream (i.e., the indirect/direct onodes) associated with the source file need to be copied at the time the clone is created. At appropriate times, cloned files may be "de-cloned."

摘要： Object-level replication of cloned objects from a source file system to a target file system in a data storage system maintains relationships between related objects including shared data blocks so that storage requirements in the target file system match storage requirements of the source file system. Specialized processing may be used to scan an indirection object that refers to other file system objects such that objects requiring replication can be identified on an incremental basis based on checkpoint numbers. Checkpoints in the target file system are managed so that checkpoint number requirements for replicated clone objects are enforced in the target file system.

摘要： A distributed system includes a plurality of nodes connected over a network. Each node has a unique identifier which identifies the node in the distributed system. Tasks are launched from any node in the distributed system and include a unique identifier. If a node receives a task including its unique identifier, the node executes the task. Each node stores each task in a log. If a node fails, after recovering from the failure, the node queries the distributed system for tasks which were not received and tasks which were not completed due to the failure. Tasks may be launched on nodes based on location data gained by using in-band access to metadata specifying a location of nodes storing data corresponding to the metadata. A task may include starting a virtual machine such that an IP address is encoded in a file configuring the virtual machine.

摘要： A hardware-based file system includes multiple linked sub-modules that perform functions ancillary to client data handling. Each sub-module is associated with a metadata cache. A doubly-rooted structure is used to store each file system object at successive checkpoints. Metadata is stored within an object and/or as a separate object. Provisions are made for allocating sparse objects. A delayed write feature is used for writing certain objects into non-volatile storage. Checkpoints can be retained as read only versions of the file system. Modifications to the file system are accomplished without affecting the contents of retained checkpoints. The file system can be reverted to a retained checkpoint. Multiple file servers can be interconnected as a cluster, and each file server stores requests from another file server. Interconnections between file servers can be dynamically modified. A distributed locking mechanism is used to control access to file system objects stored by the file servers.
