    • An inserting apparatus comprises an envelope holder (1) for holding an envelope (2) in a filling position, a document feed path (3) and a flap holder (22) for holding a flap (23) of an envelope (2) in an open position. On the side of the document supply path (3) where the flap holder is also located, the most downstream roller (18) is formed by a return pulley (18) of a conveyor belt (6). Owing to a conveyor belt (6) being trained over the most downstream roller (18) on that side of the document feed path (3) where the flap holder (22) is also located, a small roller (18) can be used without this leading to run-in problems. The documents are moreover forcefully advanced at the end of the document feed path (3) into a nip between two rollers (18, 19).

    • A brightness pattern of a document (71, 101) is stored in a memory. At least a part (73, 102, 105) of another document (71, 101) is optically scanned. The scanned brightness pattern is compared with the stored brightness pattern. When more than a specified minimum extent of agreement between the scanned and the stored brightness patterns is found, a signal is generated. The composition of the set is carried out in accordance with that signal.
Because scanned brightness patterns are compared with a brightness pattern of a document, a random brightness pattern present on a document can be used for controlling the composition of the set.
Further, an apparatus for practicing the method according to the invention is disclosed.

    • Via a data channel, a central data processor is connected to a plurality of data processors each associated with a station. Communication between the data processors associated with stations and at least the central data processor occurs via said data channel. The data processors each associated with a station are selectively activated for communication via the data channel in response to given control signals. According to the invention, data processors each associated with a station are connected to connections associated with the position of the associated stations in the apparatus. The connection to which a data processor is connected determines in response to which of the control signals the data processor is activated. Thus, the central processor is simply and automatically provided with information regarding the positions of the stations in the apparatus.

    • An envelope (10) to be opened and emptied has a first and a second panel (12, 13) at least partially severed along three folding edges and interconnected along a fourth folding edge (14). A portion of the first panel (12) is moved relatively to the second panel (13) in the direction of the fourth folding edge (14) and pivoted about the fourth folding edge (14). According to the invention a portion of the envelope (10) adjoining the substantially severed folding edge opposite the fourth folding edge (14) is curled and subsequently the edge of the second panel (13) opposite the fourth folding edge (14) is witheld by a retainer (20) from following the movement of said portion of said first panel (12). Envelopes of which the front and the back panel are not completely severed along three folding edges can mechanically and reliably be opened and emptied.

    • A method and an apparatus for folding pliable material, such as documents, which may differ in quality and length and which are conveyed in assembled form or succesively in a transport track. The material is provided with a fold by bending the leading edge and a contiguous portion of the material out of the plane of transport, creating a folding area by guide means and forming the folding edge by folding means. The bending out of the plane of transport of the leading edge and the contiguous portion of the material takes place during the conveying of the material, the bringing into a tubular form of the material, the flattening of the tubular form, and the feeding of the material in that flattened form to the folding means. The apparatus comprises a transport track with feeding means and, as viewed in transport direction, folding means arranged downstream thereof, as well as guide means arranged between the feeding and the folding means. The guide means form a composite hollow body having a substantially tubular inner surface and an insertion opening.
