摘要： An apparatus and method for demultiplexing a time-multiplexed signal are described. The time-multiplexed signal is a combination of component signals, each of which is modulated at a unique modulation frequency. The demultiplexer of the system includes an input interface over which the signal is received. One or more modulators receive the multiplexed signal and demultiplex the signal in stages. A plurality of receivers are used to detect clock and data from the component signals. Each of the receivers is tuned to a respective one of the modulation frequencies of the component signals. One or more of the receivers provides one or more feedback signals to a bias input and/or an RF input of one or more of the modulators. The feedback signals are used to adjust the modulators such that the power at the receiver at the associated modulation signal is maximized, thus causing the modulators to route each of the demultiplexed component signals to the appropriate receiver.

摘要： A variable pulse width optical pulse generation system includes a first and a second optical interferometric modulator (12, 14). A first drive signal (30) applied to the first modulator (12) modulates an input optical signal (16), so as to provide a first modulated optical signal (20). A second drive signal (32) applied to the second modulator (14) modulates the fist modulated optical signal (20), producing output optical pulses (22). One or both of the drive signals (30, 32) may be formed by superposing a plurality of waveforms having different frequencies, for example a base frequency and its odd harmonics. By adjusting the relative amplitudes of the drive signals (30, 32), or the relative amplitudes of the component waveforms forming the drive signals (30, 32), the pulse width and the extinction ratio of the output pulses (22) can be varied so as to achieve optimal values.

The first and the second modulator modulate a first and a second electrical modulation signal, respectively, onto an optical signal and generate a modulated optical pulse train at a first and a second optical output, respectively. An optical beam combiner combines the modulated optical bit stream generated by the first and the second modulators into a polarization multiplexed optical pulse train. A relative position of each pulse in the polarization multiplexed optical pulse train is determined by an optical path length propagated by the pulse and a relative order of each pulse in the polarization multiplexed optical pulse train is determined by a relative phase of the modulation signal that generated the pulse.

The demultiplexer includes an electrical splitter that separates an electrical TDM data signal into multiple electrical TDM data signals. A clock recovery circuit generates a clock signal that is synchronized to the electrical TDM data signal and that has a frequency that is harmonically related to a single TDM channel data rate. A phase shifter adjusts the phase of the clock signal. The demultiplexer also includes multiple decision circuits each having a data input for receiving the electrical TDM data signal. Each of the decision circuits also has a clock input that is electrically coupled to an output of the clock recovery circuit for receiving the clock signal. Each of the decision circuits generates demultiplexed TDM signals. The phase shifter is adjusted so that the desired data in each of the demultiplexed TDM signals is selected.

A dither modulation signal is superimposed on the polarization multiplexed optical pulse train. A polarization selective element receives the transformed polarization multiplexed optical pulse train and passes a polarized optical pulse train including the dither modulation signal. A detector receives the polarized optical pulse train including the superimposed dither modulation signal and generates a signal that is proportional to the amplitude of the dither modulation signal. A feedback control unit receives the signal generated by the detector and generates a control signal. The polarization transformer adjusts the polarization state of the polarized optical pulse train in response to the control signal.
