    • A process for preparing a photographic resist image which comprises the steps of: (1) exposing to a subject a photographic material comprising:

      (i) a support,
      (ii) a transparent or translucent substantially non-hardened hydrophilic colloid layer essentially containing gelatin as binder and incorporating a hardening developing agent,
      (iii) a substantially non-hardened hydrophilic colloid layer essentially containing gelatin as binder and incorporating colouring substances,
      (iv) a substantially non-hardened gelatin silver halide emulsion layer, and
      (v) a transparent substantially non-hardened gelatin top layer, and

      (2) contacting the exposed material with an alkaline aqueous liquid to activate the development of the developable silver halide,
      (3) removing the substantially unhardened portions by wash-off, wherein said liquid contains at least 100 g potassium carbonate per liter to reduce the swelling of the resist and to improve its resistance against abrasion.
