    • An overfill valve construction to be utilized in a storage tank (22) having a chamber (30) therein for liquid fuel and the like and having an inlet riser pipe (24) extending therefrom and comprising a drop tube (21) for being inserted through the riser pipe and having a portion thereof disposed within the storage tank, a poppet valve (64) in the drop tube and having a valve seat (71) and a movable valve member (65) for opening and closing the valve seat so as to tend to close the drop tube between the opposed ends thereof, and a float (43) operatively interconnected to the valve member to cause closing of the valve member when the float is raised to a certain position relative to the portion by rising liquid in the chamber of the storage tank, the portion having an external wall that defines a generally cylindrical tubular section that has a generally circular transverse cross-sectional configuration throughout the length thereof except for a depressed area (41) therein and in which the float can be disposed so as to be maintained substantially within the outline of the configuration when the drop tube has the portion inserted through the riser pipe to be received in the chamber of the storage tank.

    • An overfill valve having a saddle-shaped, flapper valve element located within an inlet pipe and a mating valve seat disposed about the inner wall of the pipe. A spring couples a weighted float to the valve element and extends generally outward from the pipe. The float moves the valve element from a normally open position to a closed position as the float is raised. A controlled drain aperture through the valve element permits standing fluid within the pipe to drain. The spring allows tne float to be moved to permit the pipe to be slid down a storage tank casing. A triggering mechanism is coupled to the float and valve element so that the float shifts a Triggering element into the liquid flow through the valve, and the force of liquid flow against the triggering element forces the valve element toward the closed position.
