摘要： A number of optically cascaded electroabsorption modulators (EAMs 200, 210, 220 ...) are electrically biased to provide an optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) signal. The optical input into the first of the cascaded EAMs is a susbtantially cw light beam. In operation, each EAM is normally biased to allow transmission of light, and data is represented by blocking transmission of light for a short period, thereby imposing dark pulses onto the light. Thus, light between dark pulses remains unperturbed and is available for further modulation by subsequent EAMs. In this way, each EAM can be arranged to provide a single data channel of the overall OTDM signal.

摘要： A pulse compression device is disclosed for generating ultra-short pulses in the femtosecond range. In the device, an input soliton is subjected to pulse width compression by propagation in a rare-earth doped optical fiber (3) having a gradually diminishing group velocity dispersion from an input end to an output end. The pulse compression is produced by the diminishing dispersion value of the optical fiber (3) as well as by adiabatic narrowing generated by a pumping light coupled, through an optical coupler, to the optical fiber by increasing the energy of the input soliton propagating in the optical fiber (3). By adjusting the light power of the pumping light, the pulse width of the soliton can be freely controlled.

摘要： In order to achieve increased spacing between amplifiers in soliton transmission systems, it is proposed to use distributed amplifiers, whereby the fibre is a continuous amplifier, rather than or in addition to the conventional lumped amplifiers. This is achieved by using rare earth, for example, erbium doped fibre as the or part of the transmission fibre (4; 4, 7) for the solitons and arranging that the erbium doped fibre appears substantially lossless to input soliton pulses. The latter can be achieved by varying the erbium concentration along the fibre length and providing appropriate optical pumping (5) for the erbium doped fibre. Alternatively, the output of the pump (5) for the fibre can itself be pumped (5a) whereby to replenish the pump power lost to the erbium doped fibre.
