摘要： In a recorder having two inline heads (140, 142), such as a record head followed by a reproduce head, it is necessary to insure adequate tape wrap angle (152) at the transducing element (148, 149) of each head. Because the tape (150) is spanned between the two inline heads (140, 142), the tape (150) leaves the apex (156) of one head (142) at a zero wrap angle and arrives at the apex (158) of the second head (140) with a zero wrap angle. The invention provides outriggers (162, 166) on each head assembly (140, 142) which guide the tape (150), and teaches placing each transducing element (148, 149) off the apex (156, 158) of its head assembly to maintain adequate wrap angles at the transducing element (148, 149) of each inline head (140, 142). The outriggers (162, 166) are provided with slots which skive entrapped air to prevent tape ''flying'' with attendant loss of contact with the transducing elements (148, 149). The contours of the outriggers (162, 166) and the lands (170, 171) on which the transducing elements (148, 149) of each head assembly (140, 142) are located form constant area profiles to provide constant wear characteristics for the head assemblies (140, 142).

The core (12) has two major surfaces (16, 18), two side edges (20, 22), and upper (24) and lower (26) edges. Two wound wire coils (30, 32) are mounted to the core (12) adjacent respective side edges (20, 22) and extend beyond the major surfaces (16, 18). The yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''') includes two opposed major surfaces (44, 46) and a front surface (36) which defines a bearing surface (48) for supporting the recording tape. A narrow slot (50) is formed in the front surface (36) to receive the core (12). The walls of the narrow slot (50) stabilize the core (12) along the length of the core (12) adjacent the core upper edge (24). Relief pockets (52, 54) extend between the two major surfaces (44, 46) of the yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''') and encompass at least a portion of the narrow slot (50). The relief pockets (44, 46) permit winding the coils (30, 32) around the core (12) after the core (12) is positioned in the yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''').
