摘要： A retractable syringe (10) having a barrel (40), a needle (72), a hollow plunger (30) and resilient means (80). The barrel (40) has a front end (52), a rear end (54) and defines a receptacle (46) for containing a liquid for injection. The needle (72) is mounted at the front end (52) of the barrel (40). The hollow plunger (30) is movable within the barrel (40) from the rear end (54) to the front end of the receptacle (46) to expel fluid out of the barrel (40) through the needle. The plunger (30) has an inner chamber (34), an axial hole (36) at the front end of the chamber (30) and means (38) blocking the axial hole (36). The resilient means (80) is adapted to urge the needle (72) in a rearward direction into the barrel (40). The resilient means (80) is restrained by an expandable annular member (90) providing a seal at the front end of the receptacle of the barrel (40). The expandable annular member (90) is engaged by a forward part (38) of the plunger (30) when the plunger (30) reaches the front end of the receptacle (46) of the barrel (40). This causes the expandable annular member (90) to move along a surface (116) at the front end of the barrel (40) and expand to release the resilient means (80). The axial hole (36) is then unblocked and the needle (72) is automatically retracted through the axial hole (36) into the inner chamber (34) of the plunger (30). The resilient means (80), in its restrained condition, limits movement of the needle (72) under the above movement of the expandable annular member (90) to release the resilient means (80).

摘要： A retractable, single use syringe (10) comprises a barrel (20), a collar (60) mounted to the barrel, a retraction spring (70), a needle mount (40) located at a needle end (23) of the barrel and a plunger (30). The plunger comprises a first plunger member (31) and a second plunger member (33) that are releasably coupled to co-operatively maintain the retraction spring in an initial compressed state. The second plunger member (33) further comprises a seal (34) to prevent fluid leakage between plunger (30) and barrel (20). After depression of the plunger to deliver the fluid contents of the syringe, the first plunger member (31) engages the needle mount (40) with needle (12) attached thereto and is rotatably uncoupled from the second plunger member (33) to allow decompression of the retraction spring (70), which forces retraction of the first plunger member (31), needle mount (40) and needle (12) engaged therewith. The first plunger member (31) and the collar (60) comprise elements that co-operatively form a disabling means that prevents or at least minimizes the likelihood of subsequent depression or withdrawal of the plunger (30). Also following retraction of the first plunger member (31), the second plunger member (33) and seal (34) remains at the needle end (23) of the barrel (20) thereby preventing refilling and re-use of the syringe.

The plunger (30) has a mounting hole (50) extending through the seal end (34) thereof to receive a mandrel (56). The barrel (80) includes a hub retainer (86) at the forward end thereof and a needle hub (100) retained therein. The mandrel (56) includes barbed tines (66, 68) with surfaces having axes of the conical surfaces that are displaced from one another such that movement of the tines (66) toward one another also brings the axes closer. A catch (144) associated with the back end of the spring element (140) coupled with the mandrel (56) at the other end cooperates with shoulders on smooth surfaces within the cavities to retain tension within the spring element. The hub retainer (86) and the needle hub (100) cooperate to insure that the needle hub (100) is constrained to limited motion such that the mandrel (56) will fully engage the needle hub (100).

The interior of the hollow plunger is initially hydraulically sealed off by a plunger front end wall (44) from the fluid chamber of the syringe to prevent fluid from entering the interior of the hollow plunger. After the plunger has been depressed to expel fluid from the barrel, further depression of the plunger causes cutting punch type members to sever a disc shaped flange portion of a stem type needle retaining member and the plunger front end wall thereby permitting the spring to propel the needle, and needle retaining member into the hollow plunger thereby retracting the needle and retaining member inside the barrel.

In certain embodiments, the syringes incorporate retractable carriages that can be retracted into the syringe barrels by engaging with the plungers. The carriages are configured to receive different needle hubs having any number of needle sizes. In certain other embodiments, the carriages are spring loaded so that as the plungers disengage the carriages from the syringe barrels, the springs automatically retract the needles into the barrels. Still in certain other embodiments, needle hubs with spring loaded needles are used with the syringes. The needles are retracted into the barrels when the plungers activate certain mechanisms incorporated into the hubs to thereby release the needles.
