    • The invention relates to an improvement to answerphone apparatus which allows the same to be adapted in response to incoming calls. Typically answerphone apparatus includes a recorded message which can be played regardless of the identity of the caller. The present invention allows for the incoming call to be identified where possible and the ID data for the call to be compared to stored entries which include ID data for known callers. The apparatus includes a series of recorded messages which can be selectively played. If an incoming call ID data matches one of the stored entries, the matched entry is linked to a selected message from the number of messages and, if the answerphone is activated, the selected message is played to the caller thus allowing a more customised message to be played to the caller than with conventional apparatus.

    • The invention to which this application relates is an improvement to an electronic programme guide which is typically provided in relation to a television broadcast system. The electronic programme guide is typically generated from data which is transmitted from a remote location to a receiver at a premises and displayed on a display screen connected to the receiver. In accordance with the invention the user can refer to the guide and select a programme or programmes scheduled to be shown at a time in the future and details and/or identification for the selected programme are held in a memory in the receiver. In one embodiment a display can be generated which shows the user the details of those programmes selected.

    • This application relates to the ability to receive data, typically transmitted from a remote location by a broadcaster in a digital encoded format. Typically the data can be provided in an encrypted format for security purposes. In order to allow the data which is to be held in a memory to be processed, but still be secure, the method and system allows for the addition of location identifiers for the material in the memory. Thus, in one embodiment, the received encrypted material is first descrambled or decrypted and parsed to allow the generation of location identifiers for portions of the material. Once parsed, the location identifiers are stored in a database in the receiver and the material is again encrypted locally at the receiver prior to storage in the memory. Typically these steps are performed as one process, thereby preventing unauthorised access to the material when it is in a descrambled or decrypted form.

    • The invention relates to the provision of apparatus and a method for use in the selective distribution of selected data streams from a plurality of data streams which have been received at a particular location. The data is transmitted typically via a satellite transmission system and is received at each receiving premises via at least on Low Noise Block connected to at least one broadcast data receiver. A satellite multiplexer/channel stacker apparatus is provided and the invention provides for the detection and comparison of the values of at least one characteristic of at least tow data streams in the stacker apparatus. If the difference between the values is greater than a predetermined level a parameter of at least one of the data streams is adjusted until the difference falls below the predetermined level. This allows a reduction in data errors and reduces the degradation of the system implementation margin.
