    • A controllable double overrunning clutch assembly includes concentric inner and outer members (182,184) and a plurality of opposed pairs of clutch pawls (150L,150R) operably disposed between the members (182,184). The clutch pawls (150L,150R) are biased radially outwardly and include cam tracks (160,170) which cooperate with an axially translatable circumferential control collar (200). The control collar (200) can be translated to select various combinations of active (engaged) or inactive (retracted) pawls to effect four distinct operational modes: fully engaged, i.e., locked in both directions, drive and overrunning in a first direction, drive and overrunning in the reverse direction and fully disengaged, i.e., released or inactive. The overrunning clutch assembly finds particular application in transfer cases of four wheel drive vehicles.

    • A ratchet one-way clutch (20) has an inner member (22) with notches (28), an outer member (24) with pockets (26) and pawl members positioned in the pockets (26) for engagement with the notches (28). The pawl members have a pivot ridge (30) which mates with a peak (40) in the pockets (26). The pawl (25) center of mass (CM) is selectively positioned so that the pawl (25) can have a tendency to engage or disengage the notches (28). In alternative embodiments garter springs (58), coil springs (140) or ribbon springs (94) can be used to provide a tilting force on the pawls (25). Axial retainment members (62, 64) having axially extending flanges (118) can also be used with the present invention for improved radial bearing capability.

    • A three plenum air distribution manifold for intake air to internal combustion engine with long, narrow runners leading from first and second spaced side plenums for delivery of air and recirculating exhaust gases into corresponding combustion chambers of the engine. One end of the spaced side plenums are connected by an acoustically balanced cross over passage selectively closed by a manifold tuning valve for improving engine output torque during low engine speed. A third plenum is positioned intermediate the two side plenums to communicate with the combustion chambers in bypass relation to the side plenums thereby directly supplying air to the combustion chambers through short runners which are selectively opened by valves to optimize engine torque over a higher range of engine speeds. The manifold tuning valve and short runner valves are controlled by an onboard electronic controller responsive to signals from the engine corresponding to parameters such as engine speed. The short runner valves are connected to a short runner valve shaft, and a biasing assembly applies a load to selected journal locations for the shaft to reduce oscillations of the shaft and the potentially resulting chatter. Further and endplay control assembly limits total endplay to non-uniform expansion or contraction between the plastic manifold and the metal short runner valve shaft and short runner valves.
