摘要： A high speed input system for an inserter machine. The system controlling a guillotine cutter (21), a cutter transport (90), and an upstream web handler transport (80) to increase throughput for mail production. The controller is programmed to control the high speed input module in accordance with a repeating cycle. The cycle time is determined as an amount of time between a first web feed request and an earliest possible time that a subsequent second web feed request can be acted upon. A cutter transport motion control profile initiates feeding of a document length of web after receiving the first feed request. The cutter motion control profile causes the cutter blade to begin descending when the cutter transport has moved the web (120) a trigger distance, calculated such that the cutter blade (21) will first make contact with the web immediately when the web has been halted by the cutter transport motion profile. A web handler transport profile moves the web the document length at velocities and accelerations less than the velocities and accelerations of the cutter transport. At the end of the cycle, the web handler transport causes the web to be transported at a nominal velocity selected to maintain an appropriate amount of the web loop in the web handler. Within the web handler a control loop expands and contracts as the downstream cutter transport stops and starts as the cutter blade cuts the web in each cycle.

摘要： A buffer transport system is disclosed for staging accumulated documents produced by an input module of an inserter system. The system including a plurality of roller nips (33) in series. Each of the roller nips are driven by an independently controllable motor (32) in communication with a controller (100). The series of roller nips form stopping stations (A1-A4, B1-B6) along the length of the buffer transport. Each of the stopping stations has a uniform length and is comprised of two or more of the roller nips. The roller nips in any given stopping station are electronically geared together under the control of the controller (100). The controller controls stopping stations to transfer accumulated documents within the stopping stations to a next downstream stopping station when it is sensed that the next downstream stopping station is open. If the next downstream station from a given station is not open, then the controller does not instructs the station to transfer documents downstream. The stopping stations are configurable between at least a first configuration (B1-B6) and a second configuration (A1-A4), the second configuration (A1-A4) having more roller nips in each station than in the first configuration (B1-B6). The first configuration includes more stopping stations, of shorter length, over the fixed length of the buffer transport than the second configuration.

摘要： An accumulator device with a downward angled input transport (42). Downstream, an accumulating receptacle (44,47) receives sheets. The accumulating receptacle has an upper guide (47) and a lower guide (44) forming a horizontal accumulating channel. Dump rollers (43) act as a stop during sheet accumulation, and as a transport for removing completed accumulations from the sheet accumulating device. A rear portion of sheets (1) buckle downward into a trap arrangement (45) below the input rollers (41). Preferably, the upper guide of the accumulating channel comprises a continuously rotating belt (47) to urge accumulating sheets against the dump rollers (43). Also, a positive air device (49) may be used to assist in the buckling of the rear portion of the sheets. To assist in handling large collations, when a sheet arrives at the dump rollers (43) they advance by a small predetermined incremental displacement slightly shingling the sheets (1) to maintain positive control for later reliable discharge.

摘要： A method and apparatus for improving the timing between the releasing of documents (50,52,54,56) from enclosure feeders (40,42,44,46) and the arrival of pusher fingers (30) fixedly attached to a conveyer belt (14) in a gathering section of an inserting machine. As the conveyer belt begins to wear and stretch after being used for a long period of time, the timing between the releasing of documents (50,52,54,56) and the arrival of pusher fingers (30) may no longer be appropriate. By using two sensors (72,74) placed, preferably, at the two ends of the gathering section to measure the timing of the arrival of the pusher fingers (30) at the sensors, the stretch of the chain can be determined and the delay of the arrival of a pusher finger at each enclosure feeder can be calculated. Adjustment to the releasing timing at each enclosure feeder can be made accordingly.
