    • An abrasivejet nozzle assembly is disclosed which is particularly suitable for drilling small diameter holes in a workpiece. Such assemblies include a mixing region (42) wherein abrasive particles are entrained into a high velocity waterjet formed as high pressure water is forced through a jet-forming orifice (18). Among the unique features of the nozzle assembly are an inwardly tapered abrasive path (46a) just upstream of the mixing region, flushing conduits (48,59) immediately upstream and downstream of the mixing region, and a venting passageway (50) upstream of the mixing region which prevents the backflow of abrasive dust towards the jet-forming orifice.

    • A high pressure fluid pump having a reciprocating piston (20) which pumps fluid through a central passageway (28) in a valve body (24) of a valve assembly. The valve body (26) forms with an end section of the housing (16) a high pressure fluid chamber (34) axially aligned with the piston (20). The effective pressure area in the valve chamber (34) acting on the valve body (26) is greater than the effective pressure area acting on the valve body (26) from the cylinder chamber in which the piston (20) reciprocates, so that a net rearward force is exerted on the valve body (26). There are forward and rear seal members (50,52) around the valve body (26) which are caused to come into sealing engagement due to fluid pressure in the valve chamber (34).

    • A seal assembly (20) having a backup ring (26) through which a piston reciprocates. There is a seal sleeve (58) made of a non-abrading, extrusion resistant material that surrounds the piston at a location forwardly of the backup ring (26). The backup ring (26) has an opening (42) to receive the piston (14), and the opening (42) is formed to define a radially and rearwardly expanding gap (52) between the piston (14) and backup ring (26) to receive and discharge any seal material which may extrude into the gap.
