    • A variable gain amplifier (VGA) having stable input impedance matching and a stable noise figure in spite of a variation of an amplification gain is provided. In an embodiment of the VGA, a first stage of a cascode amplification unit (3200) has a fixed impedance regardless of a change of an amplification gain, and a variable gain determination unit (220) comprised of a plurality of transistors is formed at an upper stage in the cascode amplification unit (3200). Accordingly, a change of an input impedance of the cascode amplification unit (3200) due to the change of the amplification gain is minimized. In another embodiment of the VGA, an amplification gain of an amplification unit is controlled by adjusting a voltage applied to the amplification unit by controlling a current to be output by a current supply source, and stable input impedance matching and a stable noise figure are obtained.

    • A digital amplifier (21) amplifies the amplitude of a one-bit digital signal, received from a ΔΣ block (22), by allowing gate drive circuits (28, 29) to drive output transistors (Q21-Q24) so as to switch the power supply voltage (V0) supplied from a variable voltage power supply (30). A variable voltage power supply (32) sets the drive voltage of the output transistors (Q21, Q23), driven by the top gate drive circuit (28), to the voltage (V0 + V1) determined by adding a constant voltage (V1) supplied to the bottom gate drive circuit (29) to the power supply voltage (V0) supplied from the variable voltage power supply (30) to vary the voltage following up to the power supply voltage (V0). This configuration enable the drive voltage to be a requisite minimum value without affecting the switching operation of the output transistors (Q21, Q23). Therefore, the power consumption of the top gate drive circuit (28) can be reduced during small power operation.

    • The invention relates to a method for optimising signal reception for a broadcast data receiver. Broadcast Data Receivers are used to receive digital data transmitted from a remote location, process the same and then generate video, audio and auxiliary services. However the Broadcast data receiver is typically located in a household and can be susceptible to general and/or local conditions which affect the reception of the data signals at different frequencies. The present invention provides a method for optimising the signal reception at the broadcast data receiver location by allowing the analysis of amplitude gain control levels of the broadcast data receiver and then selecting the amplitude gain control levels and/or other levels which optimise the quality of the received signal at each frequency.
