Said cutting tool (279), during cutting, is rotated in a cutting position along the supporting edge (278) so that a cutting area is rotated once about the longitudinal axis, thereby separating a peripheral segment (240). During cutting, the supporting edge (278) and the at least one cutting tool (279) are advanced together with the closed strip (272). After cutting, the at least one cutting tool (279) is brought into a contact-free position in relation to the supporting edge (278) and is brought back to its initial position before cutting against the movement of the closed strip (272). The inventive method and device allow a rapid and deformation-free separation of peripheral segments (240) even from extremely thin flat material.
