    • An optical pickup lens driving apparatus comprises an optical pickup lens, four supporting wires which movably support a movable member, a fixing member in which the four supporting wires are supported, driving means which controls movement of the optical pickup lens by action of electromagnetic force, and a balance shaft in which one end of the balance shaft is connected to the movable member and a balance weight is provided at the other end, and a balancing middle portion of the balance shaft is oscillatably journaled in the fixing member. The optical pickup lens driving apparatus has a simple structure and improves performance of reading information or recording information.

    • There is disclosed an optical disk apparatus (50A) to which a CD (10), DVD (20), and extra high density optical disk (30) capable of recording/reproducing an information signal with a density higher than that of the CD (10) or DVD (20) are selectively attachable. The attached optical disk is irradiated with a laser beam (L1) for the CD from an optical pickup (51) for the CD/DVD. A focus error signal (FE1) is detected based on a return light from a signal surface, and the attached optical disk is judged to be the extra high density optical disk (30) when an amplitude of the focus error signal (FE1) is not more than a predetermined value. When the attached optical disk is judged to be the CD (10) or DVD (20), a tracking error signal (TE1) is detected based on the return light from the signal surface. When the amplitude of the tracking error signal (TE1) is not less than another predetermined value, the attached optical disk is judged to be the CD (10).

    • An assembly for controlling the position of a lens (122) in an optical data storage and retrieval drive includes a carriage that suspends a lens holder using a plurality of flexures (260,262). A lens is mounted in the lens holder such that the center of mass of the suspended lens holder lies on the optical axis of the lens, and also coincides with the center of mass of the lens. The lens holder is capable of relative motion with respect to the carriage (106) with at least one degree of freedom. The center of mass of the carriage lies within 0.1mm of the optical axis, proximate the center of mass of the lens holder. Suspensory forces acting on the lens holder are symmetric about the optical axis. A coarse magnetic drive moves the carriage in a tracking direction, and exerts forces on the carriage that are balanced and symmetric about the optical axis, so that moments about the center of mass of the carriage are effectively absent. Inertial forces acting on the carriage, and forces reactive to the magnetic drive forces are also balanced and symmetric with respect to the optical axis, and produce insubstantial moments about the center of mass of the carriage. There is a fine tracking and a focusing drive for the lens holder. Both of these drives produce balanced and symmetric forces about the optical axis, such that moments about the optical axis are absent. Inertial forces and reactive forces acting on the suspended lens holder are also symmetric about the optical axis. As a result the objective lens moves along its optical axis, and in its tracking direction without change in attitude, and its focal point can be precisely controlled with respect to the surface of a storage medium being read or written.

With the optical pickup device, the objective lens unit can be improved in operational reliability and the device in its entirety can be reduced in size.
