    • The present patent application discloses a method of recording/reproducing data on/from a multilayer recording medium, comprising steps of reading control information from a specific area of the multilayer recording medium wherein the multilayer recording medium includes at least a first layer and a second layer, the control information is located at a particular area of the first and/or second layer, and the control information on the first and/or second layer includes first and second control information for the first and second layers and wherein the first control information having recording parameters for a basic write strategy followed by recording parameters of an alternate write strategy or a higher recording speed for the first layer is followed by the second control information having the recording parameters for the basic write strategy followed by the recording parameters of the alternate write strategy or the higher recording speed for the second layer; and recording/reproducing the data on/from a main data area of the first or second layer based on the read control information.
      Furthermore, a corresponding apparatus for recording/reproducing data on/from a recording medium is disclosed.

    • A recording apparatus (200) is provided with: a recording device (352) for recording record information onto at least one of (i) a recording medium (100) including: a first recording layer (L0 layer) and a second recording layer (L1 layer) in which the record information is recorded by irradiating laser light (LB) thereon, each of the first recording layer and the second recording layer including a buffer area (102, 109, 118, 119) for preventing malfunction of the recording apparatus and a calibration area (103a, 103b, 113, 113b) for calibrating a power of the laser light which is used in recording the record information, and (ii) a recording medium comprising: the first recording layer and the second recording layer, each of the first recording layer and the second recording layer comprising the calibration area; a setting device (354) for setting a reserved area having a predetermined size for extending or generating the buffer area, by each recording unit in the calibration area; a calibrating device (354) for calibrating the power by using the calibration area other than the set reserved area; and a controlling device (354) for controlling said recording device to record the record information into at least the reserved area.
