摘要： An improvement in the reliability and lifetime of SOI-based opto-electronic systems is provided through the use of a monolithic opto-electronic feedback arrangement that monitors one or more optical signals within the opto-electronic system and provides an electrical feedback signal to adjust the operation parameters of selected optical devices. For example, input signal coupling orientation may be controlled. Alternatively, the operation of an optical modulator, switch, filter, or attenuator may be under closed-loop feedback control by virtue of the inventive monolithic feedback arrangement. The feedback arrangement may also include a calibration/look-up table, coupled to the control electronics, to provide the baseline signals used to analyze the system's performance.

摘要： A phase shift unit (12) provides a prescribed phase difference (π2, for example) between a pair of optical signals transmitted via a pair of arms constituting a data modulation unit (20) . A low-frequency signal f 0 is superimposed on one of the optical signals. A signal of which phase is shifted by π/2 from the low-frequency signal f 0 is superimposed on the other optical signal. A pair of the optical signals is coupled, and a part of which is converted into an electrical signal by a photodiode (3). 2f 0 component contained in the electrical signal is extracted. Bias voltage provided to the phase shift unit (12) is controlled by feedback control so that the 2f 0 component becomes the minimum.

摘要： A method and apparatus (100) are provided for real-time correction of a voltage drift of an optical switch (130). The correction may be made without interrupting an optical data stream of the optical switch. Output power levels of the optical switch are monitored continuously by means of a detector (150) and are converted to voltages by means of a transimpedance amplifier (100), in order to determine whether a voltage drift has occurred. Upon determining that the voltage drift has occurred, a signal processing unit (170) with voltage correction circuitry applies a voltage to a single port of the optical switch to adjust the bias point of the optical switch. The technique may be extended to adjust a voltage drift of multiple optical switches connected in series.

摘要： A nonlinear birefringent waveguide is used for four wave mixing, wavelength conversion, Raman amplification, etc. In order to adjust the polarization of the input light to such waveguide (14), a polarization controller (10) is provided. And at the output side of the waveguide (14), a power divider (20) and a polarization selective unit (22) are provided. The power of the light passed by the polarization selective unit (22) is detected at photodiode (13). The detection signal of the photodiode (13) is fed back to the polarization controller (10). The polarization controller (10) controls the polarization input light so that the power of light detected at the photodiode (13) is minimized.

摘要： A data modulator unit (10) generates a DQPSK optical signal in accordance with a data signal. A phase shift unit (19) provides a phase difference of π/2 between a pair of arms (11, 12) . A photodetector (31) converts an output signal of the data modulator unit (10) into an electrical signal. A filter (32) is a low-pass filter with a cut-off frequency lower than a symbol frequency, and filters an output signal of the photodetector (31). A monitor unit (33) detects power of an output signal of the filter (32). A phase difference control unit (34) adjusts the amount of phase shift in the phase shift unit (19) so as to minimize power of an output signal of the filter (32).
