    • A clip pusher and stop system for a surgical ligator has first and second clip-clamping jaws (3,5), a pair of handles (2,4) to actuate the jaws, a magazine of ligating clips, (8) a pusher track, (7) extending to the forward ends of the jaws, a pusher. (6) to transfer a clip along the pusher track from the magazine to a forward position between the jaws, and a stop, (17) to prevent rearward movement of the clip in the pusher track during the clip-applying and clamping procedure. The stop comprises a substantially L-shaped resilient member having a long leg (18) and a short leg (19). The long stop leg lies along a depression (20) in the first jaw (3) and affixed (24), near its free end to the first jaw. (3) The short leg, (19) extends between the first and second jaws and is receivable in a perforation, (28) in the second jaw when the jaws are actuated to clamp a clip. The short leg has an intermediate clip-contacting portion, (19d) normally extending across the pusher track. The clip-contacting portion is shiftable by an advancing clip out of the pusher track, and returns into the pusher track behind a fully advanced clip to prevent rearward movement of the clip during the clip-applying and clamping procedure and to dislodge the clip from the pusher if adhered thereto by body fluids or the like.

    • A surgical instrument for ligating and dividing a tubular vessel. The instrument has two spaced apart channels, each containing surgical ligatures of plastic or plastic-like material. A pusher mechanism associated with each of the channels advances the ligatures along the channels. A cutting mechanism intermediate the two channels is used to divide the tubular vessel. An actuating mechanism is connected to the pusher mechanism and to the cutting mechanism for initiating operation thereof. A sub-housing is associated with each of the channels and is movable with respect to the ligatures and with respect to the cutting mechanism. Ligatures are placed at two spaced apart positions of the tubular vessel to effect ligation. The vessel is divided intermediate the spaced apart ligatures while the vessel is advanced so as to facilitate ejection of the ligatures and prevent stretching of the tissue.

One of the legs is provided with a base defining guide means for engaging portions of an instrument that may be used to apply the clip. An instrument is provided to apply the clip and includes first and second handles mounted together for pivotal movement. Each handle extends beyond the pivot axis to form a clip closing jaw. The first handle includes a guideway for receiving a plurality of the open clips. A pusher member is provided within the first handle to push the clips to the jaw region. A spool is mounted for rotation in the first handle jaw and includes a forward flange and a rearward flange between which the front clip of the row of clips may be positioned. An L-shaped rod extends from the spool and is pivoted in one direction by one of the handles when the handles are closed to rotate the spool to permit passage of the closed clip from the jaws after the jaws are subsequently partially opened. The rod is also pivoted in a second. opposite direction after the handles are partially opened to orient the spool to block feeding of the next clip beyond the jaw region.
