    • A pedal assembly (12) for electronically controlling an engine throttle (38). The pedal assembly (12) includes a pedal housing (14), a pedal arm (18) pivotally engaging the pedal housing ( 14 ), and an electrical generator ( 30 ) supported by the pedal housing (14). The pedal arm (18) is operable between an idle position (24) and a plurality of operable positions. When the pedal arm ( 18 ) is pivoted to a predetermined operable position (50), a kickdown member (46) provides a kickdown feel to a user. Simultaneously, the electrical generator ( 30 ) generates a control signal having a predetermined magnitude causing the automatic transmission (42) to downshift to a next lower gear. The kickdown member (46) is adjustable to synchronize the kickdown feel provided by the kickdown member (46) with the downshift to the next lower gear.

The shifter knob ( 18 ) comprises a retainer sleeve ( 34 ) consisting of organic polymeric material and a bulbous bulb ( 36 ) molded about the sleeve ( 34 ). The sleeve ( 34 ) has an inner cylindrical surface and an open sleeve bottom and a closed sleeve top ( 40 ) for disposition over the connector cap ( 14 ). A complementary tongue ( 24 ) extends downwardly from the interior of the sleeve top ( 40 ) for mechanically engaging a groove ( 24 ) in the connector cap ( 14 ).     • A pedal assembly includes a housing (16) and a pedal arm (14) pivotally connected to the housing (16) with a first end supporting a pedal pad (12) and a second end forming a pedal pivot arm (26) . The coil spring (24) has a first distal end (34) seated in the notch (32) and a second distal end (36) that is in bias contact with the cam lobe (38) . The coil spring (24) is forced into frictional contact with the side wall of the collar portion (30) when the pedal arm (14) is pivoted from a rest position to an operative position to reduce the spring force of the coil spring (24) on the pedal arm (14) .

The adjustment element ( 5 ) selectively moves the pedals ( 6 , 7, 8 ) between a plurality of operable positions. The adjustable pedal assembly is characterized by the pedals ( 6, 7, 8 ) being pivotally supported with respect to the adjustment element ( 5 ) wherein the second pivot axis ( 4 ) is generally parallel to the first pivot axis ( 9 ). A driving mechanism with an electric motor ( 11 ) and gear assembly ( 12 ) is used to rotate the adjustment element ( 5 ) about the second pivot axis ( 4 ). The pedals ( 6, 7, 8 ) are pivotally mounted within the adjustment element ( 5 ) to pivot about the first pivot axis ( 9 ), thus the first pivot axis ( 9 ) moves with respect to the second pivot axis ( 4 ) when the adjustment element ( 5 ) is rotated.
