    • An in-line strapping system which is particularly adaptable for strapping a compressible stack of sheet material includes a stack feeding mechanism which captures and holds the stack with its vertical side faces squared through the strapping cycle. A pair of vertically disposed compression belts captures the stack fed from an upstream squaring mechanism (10) and feeds the stack into a strapping station (11) to partially encircle the stack with a strap disposed in the path of movement. Only one lateral side of the stack is captured between the compression belts such that the stack is held in cantilevered fashion in the strapping station with the opposite lateral side unsupported. A rotary strap arm (40) supports the partially wrapped strap and carries it around the unsupported rear portion of the stack to a sealing position overlapping the free end of the strap beneath the stack. A heat sealing apparatus seals the overlapping portions of the plastic strap, simultaneously cuts the strap to provide a new free end and clamps the new free end in a preliminary holding position. The strapped stack exits the system and the rotary strap arm continues in the same direction to an upper position and repositions the strap in the path of the next incoming stack. The heat sealing apparatus and associated strap clamping mechanism are operated by a common camshaft adapted to provide one complete operating cycle in a single revolution. The unidirectional rotation of the rotary strap arm allows the use of much simplified strap clamping mechanisms.

    • A method of welding at least two layers (18, 20) of thermoplastic material, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate or polyporopylene, and a weld (30) so produced comprises directing a jet of hot gas from a nozzle (10), through a hole (16) in an inlet mask (16), and against the layers (18, 20). The layers (18, 20) are backed by an outlet mask (22) having a hole (26) and serving as a heat sink. The inlet mask (16), the layers (18, 20), and the outlet mask (22) are clamped together. A transverse weld (30) is formed entirely of the material of the layers (18, 20). The weld (30) has a columnar shape with an enlarged end (32′), which is cold-headed. The opposite end of the weld is level with or depressed with respect to marginal surfaces of the adjacent layer (18, 20). If the material is crystallizable, the weld may be more crystalline than other portions of the layers.

    • An apparatus to tie a ribbon around an object, such as a bundle (22) of wires, said apparatus comprising: a) a housing having: 1) a wrapping area where there is a longitudinal axis (52), a vertical axis (54), and a transverse axis (56) perpendicular to and intersecting the longitudinal and vertical axes; 2) a reference plane coinciding with said longitudinal and vertical axes; and 3) a tying area spaced from said transverse axis; said wrapping area having first and second sides on opposite sides of said reference plane, and an outside direction denoting location further from said transverse axis and an inside direction denoting location closer to said transverse axis; b) a carrier (30) mounted to the housing and adapted to engage a lead portion of said ribbon and move in a wrapping path circumscribing said wrapping area; c) transversely movable locating and tie means (46, 48, 50) to locate said ribbon around said wrapping area and to move said ribbon transversely; d) control means to move said carrier in a circumferentially forward direction along said wrapping path to the tying area so that a wrapping portion of the ribbon extends around the wrapping area and a trailing portion of the ribbon is positioned at the tying area on the second side of the lead portion, and to operate the locating and tie means to move the lead portion and trailing portion tranversely relative to one another in one direction to move said lead portion to the second side of the trailing portion, with one of the portions being outside the other of the portions, then moving the lead portion and trailing portion transversely relative to one another in an opposite direction to move said lead portion to the first side of the trailing portion, with the other of said portions being inside said one of said portions to form a tie at the tie area.
