    • A cryogenic pump capable of operating with a sub-zero net positive suction head includes a reciprocating piston (22) positioned in a cylindrical housing (12) for dividing the interior of the housing into a supercharger chamber (36) and an evacuation chamber (38) on opposite sides of the piston (22). A supercharger chamber valve (83), positioned directly behind the reciprocating piston (22), controls the flow of liquified gas from a gas inlet (67) into the supercharger chamber (83). A fixed piston (40), extends into the evacuation chamber (38) and into a cylindrical skirt (32) carried by the reciprocating piston (22) in the evacuation chamber to form a high pressure chamber (43) between the two pistons (22,40). Liquified gas from the high pressure chamber (43) is supplied to a gas outlet (56) via a passageway (50) in the fixed piston. Excess pressurised liquid gas, together with any vaporised gas, is vented through orifices (80) in the top wall of the housing (12).

    • The invention provides a gas compressor (10) comprising:
         a single, straight, walled cylinder (12) having (a) a longitudinal axis (14), and (b) a single, circumferential wall; and
         headers (20, 24) at opposite ends of said cylinder (12); wherein
         one of said headers (20) has a tapped hole (28) formed in a surface thereof which opens onto said cylinder (12);
         the other of said headers (24) has a tapped bore (38) opening therethrough; and
         a first inlet vlave (30) threadedly engaged with said tapped hole (28) and confined within said cylinder (12);
         a second inlet valve (30a) threadedly engaged with said tapped bore (38) and confined within said cylinder (12);
         said second inlet valve (30a) has a throughgoing bore formed therein which is coaxial with said tapped bore (38);
         a piston rod (40) in penetration of said bores, and having one end thereof projecting outwardly from said other header (24);
         a pair of discharge valves (46, 46a) coupled to said piston rod (40), and spaced apart along said rod (40), confined within said cylinder (12);
         gas inlet ports (50, 50a) radially formed in said cylinder (12) at opposite ends thereof; and
         a gas outlet port (52) formed in said cylinder intermediate said ends thereof.

    • An inexpensive linear actuator compressor motor for cryogenic coolers includes a linear actuator (10) having a unique core (22) with a cylindrical bore (24) disposed through the axial center of the core (22) along the longitudinal axis (26) thereof. The bore (24) includes first and second parallel annular peripheral recesses (34 and 36) circumferentially coaxially disposed about the longitudinal axis (26) thereof to provide first and second cavities (38, 40) therein. The actuator (10) includes first and second pistons (28, 30) located within said bore (24). First and second annular magnets (46, 48) as well as first and second coils (51, 52) are located within the first and second annular cavities (38, 40), respectively. A tap hole is provided for charging air space behind an air gap (50) with a working fluid, e.g. helium. When the coils (51, 52) are energized, magnetic fields are created which interact with the magnetic fields provided by magnets (46, 48) to cause linear motion of the first and second pistons (28, 30). The movement of the pistons (28, 30) is effective to compress the working fluid in the compression space (32).
