摘要： An expansion valve (10) for heat transfer systems such as an air conditioning system, includes a control element (20) for controlling the flow rate of working fluid through the valve. The control element has a stem member (28) and movable member (42) movable on the stem member. Openings (38) to an internal passage (30) in the stem member are regulated by positioning the movable member to achieve regulated flow rate of refrigerant material through the valve. The movable member of the control element is moved by plunger (24) of a proportional solenoid (22). The proportional solenoid has a mgnetic flux circuit including a low permeance isolationtube (62) surrounding the plunger, which enables removal of the coil (76) and frame (78) of the solenoid from the valve. The solenoid further includes a variable permeance flux washer (69) the flux through which varies with plunger position, which is disposed from a gap (82) which provides an area of magnetic saturation. The proportional solenoid produces force/displacement characteristics which enable precise control of the control element and accurate regulation of the refrigerant flow rate through the valve.

摘要： Pulse width modulation is used to control the flow rate through a solenoid expansion valve (24) in a refrigeration system (10) using a dual evaporator, two-stage cycle. The refrigeration cycle (10) includes a phase separator (22) which receives two-phase refrigerant from the low temperature evaporator (20) and supplies liquid refrigerant to the pulse width modulated solenoid valve (24). A liquid level sensor (34) is disposed in the phase separator (22), and a controller (32) for controlling the duty cycle of the pulse width modulated solenoid valve (24) is provided to receive input from the liquid level sensor (34). The liquid level sensor (34) can be of the type which provides a continuously variable signal as a function of liquid level, or it can be a liquid level switch which controls valve duty cycle on the basis of whether the phase separator liquid level is above or below a set level. Alternatively, two liquid level switches (34a, 34b) can be provided.

The compressor clutch cut-off is controlled by a suction pressure sensor (54) at high thermal load. At partial flow conditions of the expansion valve (28), representative of moderate evaporator thermal loading, the micro-computer controls compressor clutch (14) "ON" time from an accumulated count incremented by a predetermined amount according to suction pressure change. When the accumulated count over successive signal sampling intervals reaches a predetermined maximum the clutch (14) is cut-out based on the count which is representative of a predetermined time interval.
