摘要： A graded index type optical fiber having a multilayer structure comprising a plurality of concentrically arranged layers formed of (co)polymers selected from the group consisting of two or more homopolymers HP1, HP2, ..., HPn derived from monomers M1, M2, ..., Mn, respectively, and having refractive indices decreasing in that order, and one or more binary copolymers CP derived from these monomers, the multilayer structure being such that a mixed layer consisting of the (co)polymers constituting two adjacent layers is formed therebetween, and the refractive index is highest at the center and decreases gradually toward the outer periphery. This optical fiber can be continuously formed by feeding the (co)polymers to a multilayer concentric circular nozzle and thereby extruding them through the nozzle, and allowing the polymers to interdiffuse between adjacent layers of the fiber.

摘要： The present invention provides for an apparatus and method to manufacture optical fiber in a way that produces controlled and patterned diffusion of optical radiation along its length. The novelty of the described invention is that the patterns of diffusion are produced at the time the optical fiber is manufactured. The "in-line" manufacturing method avoids the need for post-production treatment of the fiber, which makes the process highly efficient and economical. Light diffusing optical fibers of significant length can be produced. Several manufacturing configurations to achieve the desired effects and their inclusion in the fiber production process are described. The processes can be configured to process optical fibers constructed from a wide variety of known glass, polymeric or other materials. The partially diffusing optical fibers of this invention have applications ranging from illuminated fabrics and toys and to lighting systems and medical instruments. A distributed sensor comprising a light detector coupled to a partially diffusing fiber is also disclosed.

摘要： Manufacturing plastic optical transmission medium with radially varying refractive index, comprising: preparing a polymeric tube having a least two concentric cylinders of polymeric material, wherein at least one of said at least two concentric cylinders of polymeric material comprises a diffusible additive which modifies the refractive index; surrounding said polymeric tube with an outer tubing, wherein said outer tubing has a higher glass transition temperature than any of the cylinders; heating said polymeric tube surrounded by the outer tubing to a temperature which is below the glass transition temperature of the outer tubing and above all of the glass transition temperatures of said at least two concentric cylinders of polymer material, wherein such heating causes diffusion of the diffusible additive in said cylinders of polymeric material, wherein such diffusion of the diffusible additive modifies the radial refractive index of said polymeric tube. The additive is selected from the class of methyl esters of perfluoro (poloxa)/aliphatic monocarboxylic acids.
