摘要： A direct fuel injection type internal combustion engine having a combustion chamber formed with a recess in which intake air is introduced and swirled. A swirl injector is arranged such that its central spray axis does not intersect the central axis of the recess but extends at an inclination thereto. The maximum distance between the facing sides of the recess is set at 25 to 65 mm. The distance between the axis of sprays of the swirl injector and a second plane intersecting, at a right angle, a first transverse plane containing the location of the maximum distance D of the recess, the second plane being parallel to the axis of sprays of the swirl injector and containing the center of the recess on the first transverse plane, is set at 6 to 20 mm. The angle contained between the axis of sprays of the swirl injector and the first transverse plane is set at 40 to 70 degrees.

摘要： A compression-ignited, opposed-piston engine equipped for multi-fuel operation includes at least one cylinder, a pair of pistons slidably disposed in the cylinder for opposing movement between respective bottom and fop center locations, and spaced-apart intake and exhaust ports near respective ends of the cylinder. The pistons include end surfaces constructed to form a shaped combustion chamber when the pistons are near top center locations during a compression stroke of the engine. At least one gaseous fuel injector communicates with the bore of the cylinder through an injector site in the cylinder between the intake port and the exhaust port. At least one liquid fuel injector communicates with the bore through an injector site in the cylinder. A fuel injection system coupled to the at least one gaseous fuel injector and to the at least one liquid fuel injector is operable to cause the at least one gaseous fuel injector to inject a main charge of gaseous fuel when the pistons are between the bottom and top center locations and to cause the at least one liquid fuel injector to inject a pilot charge of liquid fuel.

摘要： A method and apparatus is disclosed for adjusting pilot fuel injection timing in relation to a main fuel injection timing into a piston cylinder of an operating gaseous-fuelled direct injection internal combustion engine using high levels of EGR. A set of engine parameters are monitored which determine engine load and engine speed and an indicator of EGR concentration within the intake charge. Pilot fuel timing relative to main fuel injection timing is then adjusted according to the engine parameters. High levels of EGR are shown to be tolerated with relatively limited penalties in regards to other emissions typically found with high EGR by reducing the relative injection timing the pilot fuel as compared to main fuel injection timing.
