    • Method for selecting tie point locations (62) within a series of overlapping images. Initially the series of images (48) are ordered to maximize the potential for phase correlations between adjacent images. Adjacent pairs in the ordered images are then phase correlated (50) to determine the translational offsets between adjacent pairs. The overlapping regions in adjacent pairs are assessed for normalized cross correlation and initial candidate tie points are selected within the regions at a reduced resolution. The initially selected tie points are then phase correlated at full resolution (66) and any surviving candidate tie point locations are further refined to sub-pixel accuracy.

    • The wave type, orientation and rotation of an incident electromagnetic signal having an unknown polarization is identified through single channel frequency domain signal analysis of the incident electromagnetic wave power as measured by an orthogonally polarized electromagnetic sensor. A controlled switch samples between the power measurements at each orthogonal output of the sensor to generate a signal comprised of a carrier frequency component and two sideband frequency components in the frequency domain. The sampled radio frequency signal is down converted by a single channel receiver to an intermediate frequency where the carrier and one sideband frequency component are separated and coherently shifted to the same frequency. A phase detector and ratiometer measure the relative phase and amplitude differences between the separated carrier and sideband frequency components to identify the wave type, orientation and rotation of the incident electromagnetic signal.

    • A mass data storage unit includes a plurality of first data storage modules for containing tape cassettes that form a mass information storage library, a data directory archive comprising a data storage medium for maintaining a directory of the information contained on each data storage module tape cassette, and data record/playback modules for receiving any selected tape cassette from any data storage module in the mass storage library, thus providing global access to the media. A plurality of interface computers are coupled to a plurality of host computers for receiving data and for generating request signals to access information stored on said tape cassette. A file directory is coupled to the interface computers and the data directory archive for receiving the request signals, locating in the data directory archive the address of the tape cassette containing the stored information and generating a data address location output signal for the tape cassette containing the stored information. A control computer is coupled to the file directory and the mass storage library for receiving the data address location output signal from the file directory and in response thereto generating a signal for causing the selected tape cassette in the data storage module containing the requested information to be loaded into a selected data record/playback unit. An input/output data channel couples the interface computer generating the access request signal to the selected data record/playback module for selectively reading the stored information from and writing data to the selected tape cassette.

    • An adaptable card mounting system includes a number of card guides having predefined configurations selectively mounted at slot locations within a chassis (201) to enable cards of varying dimensions to be installed. A first type of card guide is mounted to opposed walls of the chassis at each slot location. This first card guide is required for installation of cards of a first length and first depth. A second card guide is mounted to the walls of the chassis in conjunction with the first card guide at slot locations requiring installation of circuit cards having a second depth different than that of the first depth. A third type of card guide is mounted between the opposed first or second card guides at selected slot locations requiring installation of cards of a second length shorter than the first length. Use of the three card guides at selected slot locations permits installation of circuit cards of varying dimensions independent of slot location. The chassis is therefore adaptable to modifications in the circuit design on the supported cards that require changing the number or shape of the included cards.
