    • A firebox (10) for a combustion apparatus, advantageously but not exclusively using biomass or biofuel, comprises a base structure (11) defining a combustion chamber (12) and a chimney (13) for the smoke, and has a door (16). The chimney (13) comprises at least a segment with a flue, cooperating with the combustion chamber (12), which is provided with a first pipe (19) and a second pipe (20) for the passage of the smoke. The first pipe (19) is associated with choking means (21) and said second pipe (20) is associated with filter means (23) located, according to the direction in which the smoke travels from the combustion chamber (12) toward the outside, before the first pipe (19) merges with the second pipe (20). The choking means (21) are associated, by means of connection means, to the position of the door (16), so that, with the door (16) open, the choking means (21) are in a position of opening the first pipe (19) and with the door (16) closed the choking means (21) are in a position of closing the first pipe (19).

    • The invention provides a natural draft, gravity feed pellet stove (10). The body of the stove is formed by a vertical section of large diameter pipe (12), with an air intake pipe (42) extending from the back of the stove to below a combustion grate (62). Pellet fuel (114) is discharged onto the grate through a slot (64) at the bottom of a hopper (66), and the grate is sloped so that the pellets roll away from the slot and over the grate as they are combusted. The combustion gasses flow into two exhaust pipes (28a, 28b) each having a diameter similar to that of the intake pipe so as to establish a 2:1 exhaust/intake flow ratio. Cross-drilled reburner tubes (72) are installed across the intake ends of the exhaust pipes to provide additional air for complete combustion. The bottom plates (88, 90a, 90b, 92) of the storage hopper are free from attachment along their lower edges, so that these expand and contract on a continuous basis with changes in the temperature of the stove; this causes cyclical distortion of the plates which shifts the fuel downwardly towards the discharge opening.
