    • A melt spinning apparatus including a spinpack (18) with a die tip block (34) having a recess (36) with a converging portion, such as an angled trough (56), which terminates in a row of filament discharge outlets (26). The recess (36) selectively receives a configuration insert, such as a side-by-side insert (38) or a sheath-core insert, that separates the converging portion of the recess (36) into two sheets of liquid that combine at the filament discharge outlets (26). The spinpack may be configured by inserting either of the inserts to produce filaments having different cross sectional configurations of two different materials. Separation of the two liquids prevents premature interaction between the two liquid flows which minimizes instabilities between the liquid flow interface. The minimization of these instabilities can result in less formation of shot and improve other significant finished product properties. In addition, each type of liquid material may be maintained at an optimum temperature for proper extrusion.

    • A spinneret assembly for conjugate spinning includes (1) a spinneret plate provided with a number of spinning holes and (2) a distribution plate superposed closely upon the upper face of the spinneret plate onto which two kinds of spinning liquids are to be fed, and the distribution plate is arranged in such a manner that, of separate spinning liquid paths for the two kinds of spinning liquid comprising a number of separate and parallel inlet grooves for receiving individually and alternately the two kinds of spinning liquids fed from above and guide paths for guiding individually the two kinds of spinning liquids fed out of the inlet grooves onto upper openings of the spinning holes in the spinneret plate, it is provided with at least said guide paths, a part or whole of each of which forms a pressure-adjusting means. Liquid storing chambers are provided on the lower face of the distribution plate at positions corresponding to the spinning holes. Each of the liquid storing chambers is recessed at the upper portion, and has at least one diameter longer than the diameter of the upper openings of the corresponding spinning hole, and is provided with two guide paths for guiding the two kinds of spinning liquid fed individually out of the adjacent two inlet grooves to both ends of the longer diameter of each of the liquid storing chambers. A part of whole of each of the guide paths extending to both ends of each of the liquid storing chambers forms pressure-adjusting means or holes having a cross-sectional area smaller than the cross-sectional area of each of the liquid storing chambers perpendicular to the longer diameter.

    • A process for forming and modifying a self-crimping polyester yarn comprising a plurality of polyester filaments having thick and thin regions along their lengths which are out of phase from filament to filament. The plurality of filaments are produced by first forming a plurality of combined streams of molten melt spun polyester by combining at least first and second extruded molten streams of fiber forming polyester travelling at different extrusion speeds to thereby from thick and thin regions in the combined streams out of phase from other combined streams. The combined streams are then quenched and thereby transformed into solid filaments in a solidification zone provided with a gaseous atmosphere at a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the polyester. The resulting filaments are then passed in the direction of their lengths through a conditioning zone, which zone is provided with a gaseous atmosphere at a temperature sufficient to decrease the percentage yarn shrinkage of the resulting filaments and to produce polyester filaments which exhibit a per cent yarn shrinkage in the range of from 10 to 45 per cent. The resulting filaments are withdrawn from the conditioning zone at a substantially constant wind-up speed in the range 2012 to 4023 m/min.
      The yarn thus obtained still exhibits a useful degree of crimp as well as properties similar to those observed in yarns spun at much higher wind-up speeds.
