摘要： A gas release device that includes a reservoir of pressurised gas and a passageway from said reservoir to an outlet. There is an elastic gas permeable membrane in the passageway that allows gas release only via the membrane. A gas impermeable member is provided in the passageway that includes an interface positioned to contact said gas permeable membrane. Displacement of the gas permeable membrane is responsive to the pressure of the gas in the reservoir such that there is a greater interfacial contact between the gas impermeable member and the gas permeable membrane at a higher gas pressure than at lower pressure to thereby vary the exposed cross sectional area of the permeable membrane available to the flow in an inverse relationship to pressure.

摘要： A method for storing respiring produce, particularly bananas, during ripening is disclosed. The method allows bananas to remain in the ripened condition for an extended period of time while, at the same time, having improved sweetness and taste characteristics. In addition, the method does not require separate handling and repackaging of the bananas between the starting of the ripening process and storage/shipment of the bananas. In this method, ripening is initiated by inserting additional gas into the banana package, such that the gas medium comprises from about 2.0% to about 5.0% oxygen, from about 5.0% to about 15.0% carbon dioxide, from about 0.8% to about 1.5% ethylene, the remainder of the gas medium being predominantly nitrogen, for a period of from about 0.5 to about 5 seconds. The composition of the gas medium in the package is then adjusted such that the gas medium has a ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide which meets the following conditions: (20.94-B) / C= from about 1.8 to about 3.8; wherein B is the percentage of oxygen in the gas medium, C is the percentage of carbon dioxide in the gas medium, and, further, wherein the percentage of oxygen in the gas medium is from about 1.0 to about 6.0, and the percentage of carbon dioxide in the gas medium is from about 3.0 to about 10.0.

摘要： Almonds, other nuts, grains, dried or dehydrated fruits or vegetables, and other agricultural foodstuffs resting on a porous mesh conveyor belt (22, 54) pass continuously through a chamber (20, 60) in which they are contacted by a gaseous oxidizing agent at atmospheric pressure as the conveyor belt and food products move continuously through the chamber. In one embodiment, the chamber is disposed through a barrier (56) which isolates a raw product receiving region from downstream processing facilities to prevent cross-contamination downstream. In another embodiment, the chamber (20) is disposed through a barrier (34) which separates a husker (14) from a downstream Sheller (40) such that the shells are sanitized prior to releasing the nutmeats from the shells. In the preferred embodiment, the gaseous oxidizing agent is hydrogen peroxide at a 1.8 mg/liter concentration which flows up through the belt vibrating the food products without scarring them as the belt conveys the food products through the chamber for a duration of about 15 seconds to achieve a 3 log reduction in human pathogens.

摘要： The process is based on vacuum packaging a fresh food product such as unpeeled potatoes (3), sealing the package (1) by a transparent film barrier (2), film which and the package (1) are comprised of a material suitable to endure high temperatures and pressures, such as those that are reached when cooking the food product (3) in a microwave oven. The film (2) fastened by heat welding on a perimetric flap (4) of the package (1), has longitudinal valves (5) in order for the steam to come out during cooking. The food product or raw potatoes (3) are washed with ozonized water, before packaging them, allowing the preservation thereof without chemicals and permitting steaming due to the fact that said product or potatoes (3) are packaged with a certain minimum degree of moisture, since what really permits the cooking phenomenon is the moisture itself of the product, in the present case the potatoes that has been 80 and 85% moisture.
