    • To precisely detect the position of a mechanically moving portion which is driven by a motor, restraining the effect of backlash. A position detector (3) produces a position detection pulse every time after a mechanically moving portion (2) driven by a motor (1) is moved by a predetermined amount. A counting means (4) counts the position detection pulses sent from the position detector (3), and a reading means (5) reads a value counted by the counting means (4) every time after a predetermined period of time. A cancelling means (6) cancels the content of the counting means (4) by a counted amount read by the reading means (5). A backlash amount storage means (7) stores a backlash amount of the drive system, and a moving amount calculating means (8) calculates a practical amount of movement of the mechanically moving portion (2) every time after said predetermined period of time based upon the content stored in the backlash amount storage means (7) and the value read by the reading means (5). An integrating means (9) integrates the results calculated by the moving amount calculating means (8).

    • A system for numerically controlling a device such as a machine tool employs a general-purpose motor (11) in a part thereof, instead of a servo motor. In this system, the current position of a shaft (10) which is driven by the general-purpose motor (11) is detected (14,9) and is compared with a command value within an NC program. When the current position is close to the command position, a brake signal (MBR, BR ) is output in order to apply a brake to, for example, the general-purpose motor (11), and the supply of rotational signals (MCW,MCCW) to the general-purpose motor (11) is inhibited to stop the general-purpose motor (11) at the command position.

    • Apparatus for use in selecting a point or plane in an object translatable along a path, and for indicating the distance of the selected point or plane from a predetermined position in the path. A reference point in the path is established by a line of light projected onto the translatable object. When the line of light identifies a point or plane of interest in the object, a reset signal is transmitted to a computer. The reset signal causes a number, a reset quantity representing the known distance between the reference point or line of light and the predetermined position, to be recorded in computer memory. As the object then is translated along the path, an encoder supplies signals to a counter that is incremented or decremented in response to movement of the object toward or away from the predetermined position. The reset quantity initially has the count both added to it and subtracted from it and the result, the reset quantity, is displayed by the computer. As the count in the counter changes during movement of the object toward or away from the predetermined position, the displayed result changes accordingly. The apparatus may be used in properly positioning a patient in a medical imaging system.
