    • In a woven slide fastener stringer (10) of the type which comprises a row of successively interconnected elongated loops (14) of a plastic filament woven into a longitudinal edge (12) of a stringer tape woven of foundation warp and weft threads (15,16), and a pair of groups of upper and lower binding warp threads (17, 18) extending respectively over and under the loops and interwoven with the foundation weft thread (16), the improvements comprising a gap-filling warp thread (20) extending parallel with and between an outermost one (17a) of the upper binding warp threads and the next adjoining upper binding warp thread (17b) and also between an outermost one (18a) of the lower binding warp threads and the next adjoining lower binding warp thread (18b), and passing alternately over and under the foundation weft thread (16), thereby tensioning the latter thread to sink substantially halfway between the upper and lower legs of each adjacent pair of loops. Preferably, the outermost upper and lower binding warp threads (17a, 18a,) are disposed in registry with each other to make the foundation weft thread (16a) lie substantially perpendicularly to the plane of the fastener stringer between the outermost binding warp threads (17a, 18a). The row of loops thus woven is stably secured in place against angular displacement and held at the proper pitch with respect to individual adjacent loops.

    • A punch blade (72; 80) depresses the coupling heads (79) of a length of successive filamentary coupling elements (76) toward a knockout blade (39) while sandwiching stringer tapes (43, 44) between upper and lower grippers (55, 56, 21, 22). The punch blade (72; 80) is lowered until lower legs (78) of the coupling elements (76) are cut off by cutter blades (31,32). The punch blade (72; 80) and the knockout blade (39) are then lifted while gripping the severed coupling elements (76) therebetween to forcibly remove the coupling elements (76) out of engagement with sewing thereads (77) on the stringer tapes (43, 44). The upper grippers (55, 56) have confronting steps (61, 62) for engaging the sewing threads (77) so that the severed coupling elements (76) can be detached reliably and smoothly from the stringer tgapes (43, 44) without unduly tensioning the sewing threads (77) and stringertapes (43,44). The punch blade (80) may have a vertical reinforcement member attached to at least one side edge thereof and having a lower tooth (86) projecting downwardly beyond a lower edge (84) is pressed against the coupling elements (76), the lower tooth (86) enters between adjacent coupling elements (76) to position the coupling elements (76) against unwanted longitudinal displacement with respect to the punch blade (80).
