A recording apparatus/ reproducing apparatus should check the identification code on the recording medium before using its own manufacture information item for some specific function. In a writeable and rewriteable recording medium such as a DVD disk, data for a plurality of still pictures and audio data added thereto is stored in one file (203) or a space having a logically one-dimensional order, rather than storing each in a separate file, and still picture group information for separating the still picture data into a predetermined number of groups in order to manage the still pictures at a group level is then stored (202). Thus, large-capacity still picture data and audio data added thereto can be recorded and/or reproduced using the minimum amount of information. The still picture group information includes general information for a still picture group, containing the start position of the still picture group and the number of video parts in the still picture group, and information for a still picture, the information containing position information thereof. The general information for a still picture group includes the start position of a still picture in the still picture group. The information for a still picture and audio data includes the sizes thereof. Therefore, effective management of information is allowed.

The method for selecting the audio channels of an A/V data stream including a plurality of programs, each program including at least two kinds of audio data streams, each audio data stream including at least two sub-audio data streams which are not repeated and have a series of IDs according to a predetermined order of precedence, includes the steps of (a) when a program is changed to another program, searching whether there is a sub-audio data stream having a channel ID which is the same as the channel ID assigned to the sub-audio data stream of the program which was being reproduced before the program was changed, in the changed program and (b) when it is determined that there is the sub-audio data stream having a channel ID which is the same as the channel ID assigned to the sub-audio data stream of the program which was being reproduced before the program was changed in the step (a), selecting the sub-audio data stream. According to the method for selecting an audio signal, it is possible to follow up the voice mode selected by a user although a program or an audio data stream is changed.
