摘要： An electrochemical reactor such as a fuel cell has a zeolite membrane (7) separating the anode (4) and cathode (5) compartments which allows the passage of ions through the membrane to carry an electric current, but prevents the passage of fuel molecules etc. through the membrane which might poison the catalyst used in the fuel cell. It is useful in methanol fuel cells using a basic electrolyte such as a carbonate salt and there can be a second zeolite membrane which prevents escape of methanol into the atmosphere which enables the fuel cell to operate at higher temperatures and hence be more efficient.

摘要： The present invention provides compounds comprising one or more fluorine atoms, sulfo radicals and phosphono radicals, each such radical being bonded to the same or different carbon atom, with the proviso that at least one sulfo radical and at least one phosphono radical are bonded to such carbon atoms through the sulfur atom and the phosphorus atom, respectively. These compounds are preferably non-polymeric, i.e. they have a molecular weight of about 5000 or less. Such compounds are useful as electrolytes, e.g. in fuel cells.

摘要： An electrolytic system 10 is provided with a gas fed cathode 12 in contact with an electrolyte 15 to which an additive of trifluoremethane sulphonic acid (TFMSA) is added. The system can be employed in fuel cells, industrial electrolytic cells for production of gases such as chlorine, and in metal-air batteries. Preferably the cathode incorporates a catalyst such as gold, platinum, palladium, silver, or spinels of Ni and Co. The supply of fluid 18 to the anode of the fuel cell is a hydrocarbon or H 2 dissolved in NaOH. Oxygen or air is supplied 11, 12 to the cathode of the fuel cell. In the industrial electrolytic cell, the anodic source of fluid and electrolyte is brine solution, and the cathodic electrolyte is dilute caustic. In the metal-air battery, an anodic solution of NaOH is supplied to an anode of Al, Ga, Zn, etc. The cathodic solution and configuration are the same as with the fuel cell.
