    • To allow compact design of a wiper system equipped with a wiping angle varying assembly which comprises an actuating motor, an eccentric cam member provided in a path of transmitting the movement of the output end of a wiper motor to a wiper arm, and a control unit for activating the actuating motor so as to move the eccentric cam member and thereby change the range of angle of the wiping movement by altering a configuration of a linkage structure provided between the wiper motor and the wiper arm, the control unit is adapted to activate the eccentric cam member with such a timing that the force transmitted through the linkage structure from the wiper motor to the wiper arm tends to assist the force produced by the actuating motor to move the eccentric cam member in the required direction. Thus, the requirement of the power output of the actuating motor can be reduced, and the actuating motor can be substantially reduced in size. As a result, the design of the wiping angle varying assembly is simplified, and the assembly may be conveniently incorporated in a linkage structure similar in structure to the conventional linkage structure for wiper systems not equipped with any wiping angle varying assembly.

    • A windshield wiper structure for a vehicle which has a wiper stroke adjusting machanism. The wiper structure includes a main lever (9) connected through a first pin with a wiper actuating rod (13) and secured through a second pin (2) to the wiper arm (4). The wiper actuating rod (13) drives the main lever (9) to swing about an axis of the second pin (2). A first eccentric shaft (16) is provided about the first pin and a second eccentric shaft (24) is provided about the second pin (2). The first eccentric shaft (16) is connected with the wiper actuating rod (13) so that a rotation of the first eccentric shaft (16) causes a relative movement between the main lever (9) and the wiper actuating rod (13). A second eccentric shaft (24) is provided about the second pin (2) and connected through an interconnecting lever (25) with the first eccentric shaft (16). A stroke adjusting (22,23) mechanism is provided for effecting a rotation of the second eccentric shaft (24).

    • A system for restraining forward movement of an occupant of a motor vehicle seat comprises a chest pad 18 on an arm 16 which is pivotable about a transverse axis 20 behind and below the seat, together with a lap restraint in the form of an arm 10 having a padded portion 12 which extends across the user's lap. The arm 10 is pivotally mounted on a transverse axis 24 located near the front of the seat. A lever 26 is fast with the arm 16 and a lever 28 is fast with the arm 10. A roller 32 engages confronting surfaces 34 and 36 on the arms 26 and 28. When the roller 32 is in the position shown, forward movement of the arm 16 causes relatively little backward movement of the arm 10 so that the occupant can lean forward in his seat without forcing the bar on the arm 10 into his lap. If, due to sudden decceleration of the vehicle, the occupant moves forward in his seat, lifting the padded portion 12, the roller 32 shoots forwards into engagement with stop surface 38. The velocity ratio of the coupling between the arms 10 and 16 has now changed so that subsequent forward movement of the padded portion 12 is approximately equal to the resulting backward movement of the lap restraint means on the arm 10 and the occupant is held in his seat.
