摘要： An image reader is provided with a transparent member which is placed in an optical path from the surface of an original document bed on the side of a carriage to a condensing lens, whereby when the transparent member exists at a predetermined position, the condensing lens can be focused on a translucent original existing at a position above the position of a reflection original. When the transparent member is at a second predetermined position, the condensing lens can be focused on the reflection original. The condensing lens can be focused on more than one position simply by placing the transparent member in the optical path, so that the structure is simple and the manufacturing costs can be reduced.

摘要： An autofocus process for imaging optics of a scanner comprises performing multiple scan-line image captures of the document to be scanned. In the preferred embodiment, these captures are of essentially the same scan-line. A focal position of imaging optics, which forms a scan-line image, is adjusted relative to an image detector in between the multiple scan-line captures of image data. In the preferred embodiment, the imaging optics is adjusted. Relay optics or a position of the image detector could alternatively be adjusted. In any case, a focus setting for a subsequent scanning operation is then calculated based on the image data from the multiple scan-line captures. In the preferred embodiment, this calculation yields a lens position for the imaging optics. The invention thus allows autofocusing to the document to be scanned. Problems associated with loss of calibration are avoided. Moreover, the system is able to adapt to documents where the image is not at the scanner's nominal focal plane.

The apparatus is equipped with a reflective scanning platform for scanning documents and photographs and a docking port for receiving a transmissive scanning platform for scanning transparencies and slides. A scanning camera equipped with light sources for illuminating the respective platforms may be aligned by the operator to retrieve images from either the reflective scanning platform or from the transmissive scanning platform. An optical switch which is included within the optical pathway selectively toggles the view of the scanning camera between the reflective platform and the transparent platform. An operator using a control panel button or software can selectively scan either type of object. The choice of two scanning platforms optimizes the digital image quality for each type of media.
