摘要： The invention concerns a system for reading magnetic media comprising several tracks of data readable in parallel, and comprising a detecting device (TL6) comprising as many sensors (T1i) as there are tracks, for simultaneously reading at regular intervals an information sample on each track. Said system further comprises: a processing circuit (M1) receiving each information sample (xi) to be processed from each track and the sample (x(i-1)) of a first neighbouring track and the sample (x(i-1), of a second neighbouring track, and calculating the diaphony affecting the information sample to be processed on account of the neighbouring tracks; an integrating circuit (l1) receiving the resulting calculated diaphony value, integrating said values obtained at each reading time, then integrating the values obtained at subsequent reading times; a control circuit monitoring the relative track (CR) receiving the integration result from the integrating circuit (l1) and delivering a control track monitoring signal of the detecting device. The invention is useful for reading high density magnetic tapes.

摘要： The optical servo system for a medium drive (600) can provide additional capabilities beyond the provision of read/write head positioning information. Auxiliary information formed on the second side (101) of tape (100) can include encryption/authentication data, tape identification data or even maintenance information and read only data; parameters can be recorded on tape to indicate its initial state as well as manufacturing data. The optical servo system for a tape drive (600) can then obtain a measure of the wear on tape. Furthermore, the system can view the image of head between loads of tape to verify head integrity and identify any optical feature defects.
The servo tracks (110) can be coded to provide data relating to longitudinal positioning of tape to enable high speed searching or be used for tape velocity determination. This auxiliary information is encoded into the servo tracks during the servo track writing process using modulation that can be separated out from the basic servo signals by the digital signal processor (609). The auxiliary information is then supplied to other drive or system processes in step (909).

In a digital tape drive embodiment (10), the positioning system (30) includes a servo read head (38) for receiving servo code from the tape (24), a voice coil motor (32) that moves the head (38), a light source (42) mounted to move with the head (38), a lateral effect photodiode (44) that is illuminated by the light source (42) to monitor misalignment (43) of the head 38 and tape (24), and a control circuit (50). Movement of the light source (42) modulates two currents (I A ,I B ) provided by the photodiode (44). An automatic gain control circuit (AGC) (70) drives the source (74) according to the normalized sum of the currents (SUM) and drives the motor (32) according to the difference of the currents (DIFF). When the tape (24) is not moving or servo code is corrupted, alignment is obtained with reference to the photodiode (44).
