    • An apparatus (10) for counting discrete objects (30) of various sizes and shapes as they travel through the apparatus in a disorderly flow. The apparatus includes a sensor array (25a) which comprises a plurality of photodetectors (38) arranged in a linear fashion. The discrete objects are passed over the sensor array. By utilizing the sensor array as a means for obtaining information about the discrete objects, the apparatus samples the sensor array at predetermined time intervals, examines the various contours of the images produced through the sampling and based upon predetermined criteria determines whether an image represents one or more objects.

    • A system for counting overlapped newspapers delivered to a stacker which employs an optical sensor which is passive in nature. Accurate count is obtained by image analysis of the image presented by the edge of the newspaper flow as the image is focused on a linear CCD array. Definitive values are determined which are quantitative of the top profile, height, of the newspapers. The processing technique employed determines the rate of change of the height of the image and utilizes the rate of change data to output a newspaper count increment when the rate of change, derivative, of top profile height changes from a positive value to a negative value and the measured profile height exceeds a calibrated value thickness, and outputs two newspaper count increments when the measured profile height exceeds a second calibrated value thickness.

    • An apparatus and a method for counting objects, such as printed copy being advanced along a path in an overlapping manner, is arranged to direct two beams of infra-red radiation on to a predetermined region in the path of advancement of the copy. The two beams are distinguishable one from the other and are directed from positions respectively upstream and downstream of said region. Two detectors (24,25) are disposed above said region, to receive radiation respectively from two distinct areas, both within said region but spaced in the direction of the path of advancement of the objects. Suitable processing of the detector outputs, to determine the gradients of the said areas, allows the generation of a count signal as the leading edge of an object passes through said region.

    • A linear array of light emitting diodes (CR1-CR7) direct a diffuse beam of radiation across the path of seeds dropping down a seed chute and onto two detectors (46,48) connected in parallel, so that every seed produces a substantially equal area pulse in the output signal from the photo detectors. The signal is amplified (50) and applied to an analog to digital converter (52) producing digital samples at a high rate for processing by a microprocessor (54). The sensor value is subtracted from an offset value corresponding to the sensor signal when no seed is present and the difference signal is repeatedly added to an area signal. The offset value is adjusted from time to time to prevent the difference signal staying persistently negative or persistently positive. Whenever the area signal reaches a threshold value the passage of a seed is indicated and the area signal is decremented by an estimated area value corresponding to one seed. This estimated area value is adjusted from time to time so as to avoid long term drift in the area value, thereby maintaining the estimated area value accurately representative.
