    • An adjustable control pedal for a motor vehicle includes an upper arm, a lower arm supported by the upper arm and operatively connected to the upper arm for selected movement relative to the upper arm, and a drive assembly operatively connected to the lower arm to selectively move the lower arm relative to the upper arm. The drive assembly includes a drive screw connected to one of the upper and lower pedal arms, a drive nut connected to the other of the upper and lower pedal arms and cooperating with the drive screw such that the drive nut travels along the drive screw upon rotation of the drive screw, and an electric motor operatively connected to the drive screw to selectively rotate the drive screw. A hall-effect sensor is located adjacent the drive screw and cooperates with a ring magnet rotatable with the drive screw to detect motion information, including distance and velocity information, upon rotation of the drive screw. A controller receives the motion information and activates the electric motor upon initialization of the controller to move the lower pedal arm in a first direction until a first mechanical stop is engaged and establish a home stop position and to move the lower pedal arm in the other direction until a second mechanical stop is engaged and establish a travel stop position. The controller then determines electronic limits of travel for the lower pedal arm based on the mechanical limits of travel to reduce engagement with the first and second mechanical stops during movement of the lower pedal arm. The controller also determines stall conditions of the lower pedal arm between the limits of travel based on the velocity information received during movement of the lower pedal arm to reduce injury or damage resulting from engagement with obstructions.

The adjustment of the brake pedal arm (14) is effected by pivoting about the free end of the master cylinder pushrod (20), which pivotally engages the brake pedal arm (14) between its ends, the pivoting being done by imposing a reversible force from an electric motor and gear box assembly attached to an upper end of the brake pedal arm (14). The accelerator pedal arm (18), an upper end of which engages the accelerator cable (22), is adjusted in unison with the brake pedal arm (14) by providing an accelerator adjustment link, an upper end of which is co-extensive with the brake pedal arm (14) and a lower end of which is pivotally attached to the accelerator pedal arm (18) at a location between the upper and lower ends of the accelerator pedal arm (18).

    • An adjustable control pedal (10) for a motor vehicle includes an upper arm (14) and a lower arm (16) carrying a pedal. The lower arm is selectively moveable relative to the upper arm to adjust the position of the pedal relative to the upper arm. A drive screw (50) is secured to the upper arm. A drive nut (54) threadably engages the drive screw and is adapted to move axially along the drive screw upon rotation of the drive screw. A motor (58) is operatively connected to the drive screw to selectively rotate the drive screw. The lower arm is operatively connected to the drive nut for fore-aft movement of the lower arm relative to the upper arm upon axial movement of the drive nut along the drive screw. A control system (13) includes a sensor (114) located at the drive screw and adapted to directly sense rotation of the drive screw and a controller in communication with the sensor to receive electrical signals from the sensor. The controller determines a position of the nut along the screw based on signals from the sensor and automatically stops the motor when the nut reaches a predetermined position along the screw such as a desired end of travel for the nut along the screw. The controller also automatically stops the motor when signals from the sensor indicate that the screw is not rotating. The controller is adapted to automatically move the lower arm in a forward direction relative to the upper arm to a predetermined position, such as a full forward position, when predetermined conditions are met which indicate the driver may egress the vehicle. The predetermined conditions can be the ignition switch turning off and/or the driver's door opening. The control assembly preferably includes a lock-out switch (128) in communication with the controller to prevent movement of the lower arm relative to the upper arm when engaged so that the lower arm is not accidentally moved. The controller is preferably adapted to automatically stop the motor and prevent further pedal adjustment when sensors indicate that a predetermined fore/aft offset between an accelerator pedal and a brake pedal, i.e. step over, is not maintained.

The adjustment device (10) allows the control pedal (20) to be optimally positioned to suit the needs of a particular driver. The control pedal (20) can be pivotally attached to a frame (14) in any conventional manner, such as with a pivot pin (24). The adjustment device (10) is mounted alongside the control pedal (20) and to the pushrod eyelet (36) without the need of additional support hardware other than a device for maintaining a predetermined distance between the pushrod eyelet (36) and the pivot pin (24) of the control pedal (20). Consequently, the adjustment device can be readily adapted to fit conventional control pedal assemblies without significant modification. The adjustment device (10) includes a camming device (38) for causing pivotable movement of the pedal arm (20) relative to the datum point (36).
