    • A cell for the electrowinning of aluminium (50) from alumina, comprises an inclined plate-like or grid-like open anode structure (25) which has a generally v-shaped configuration in cross-section. The anode structure (25) has a downwardly-oriented sloping electrochemically active surface that is generally v-shaped in cross-section and spaced above an upwardly-oriented corresponding sloping cathode surface (11) by an anode-cathode gap (40) in which alumina dissolved in a circulating electrolyte (60) is electrolysed. The anode structure (25) has a plurality of anode through-passages (45) distributed thereover for an up-flow of alumina-depleted electrolyte (60) from the anode-cathode gap (40). One or more electrolyte guide members (30,30',30'') located above the open anode structure (25) is/are arranged to guide substantially all the up-flowing alumina-depleted electrolyte (60) to an alumina feeding area (63), where it is enriched with alumina and then over and around an upper end (27) of the generally v-shaped plate-like or grid-like anode structure (25) into the anode-cathode gap (40). Alumina-enriched electrolyte (60) can be fed into a lower end and/or into an upper end of the anode-cathode gap (40).

    • A cell for the electrowinning of aluminium comprises a plurality of anodes, in particular oxygen-evolving anodes (10), facing a series of pairs of cathode blocks (25), in particular graphite blocks, with aluminium-wettable drained cathode surfaces (20) placed across the cell and a longitudinal aluminium collection recess (35) which is located between the cathode blocks (25) and which extends along the cell and is at a lower level than the drained cathode surfaces (20) so that during use aluminium produced on the drained cathode surfaces (20) drains into the aluminium collection recess (35). The aluminium collection recess (35) is defined by a separate reservoir body. in particular an anthracite body, which is placed between the cathode blocks (25) and spaces them apart across the cell. The reservoir body (30) extends along the cell and has preferably a U-shaped cross-section across the cell.

    • A bipolar cell for the electrowinning of aluminium has bipolar electrodes each comprising a carbon cathode body having on one side an active surface on which aluminium is produced and connected on the other side through an oxygen impermeable barrier layer to an electrochemically active anode layer having an oxygen evolving iron oxide-based outer surface. The anode layer may comprise a metal-based anode substrate and a transition metal oxide-based outside layer, in particular an iron oxide-based outside layer, which either is an applied layer or is obtainable by oxidising the surface of the anode substrate which contains iron. During operation, the anode layer can be kept dimensionally stable by maintaining in the electrolyte a concentration of transition metal species which are present as one or more corresponding transition metal oxides in the electrochemically-active layer. The cell operating temperature is sufficiently low so that the required concentration of transition metal species in the electrolyte is limited by the reduced solubility thereof in the electrolyte at the operating temperature. This limits the contamination of the product aluminium by the transition metal species to an acceptable level.

    • A component of an aluminium production cell, in particular a cathode or a cell lining of an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminium by the electrolysis of alumina in cryolite, having an aluminium-wettable refractory coating on a heat-stable baked carbon-containing body, is produced from a part-manufactured cell component which is a layered composite of two precursors. A precursor layer of the aluminium-wettable refractory coating contains at least one aluminium-wettable refractory material in particulate form, or a particulate micropyretic reaction mixture which when ignited reacts to form at least one aluminium-wettable refractory material, or a mixture thereof, and non-carbon fillers and binders. A non-baked or part-baked precursor of the heat-stable carbon-containing body comprises particulate carbon compacted with a heat-convertible binder which when subjected to heat treatment binds the particulate carbon into the heat-stable carbon-containing body of the fully-manufactured cell component. This layered composite is convertible to the fully-manufactured cell component by heat treatment to form the aluminium-wettable refractory coating and simultaneously bind and heat-stabilize the carbon-containing body.
