    • According to the present invention there is provided an inflation/deflation system (10) for a dilatation balloon comprising a receptacle (40), a pressure member (44), a sensing system (80) and a data processing and display unit. The receptacle is adapted to contain an inflation fluid to be introduced into the balloon during its inflation. The receptacle also has an inlet/outlet port (49) adapted for connection to the dilatation balloon; The pressure member (44) is adapted to be axially displaced within the receptacle (40) to cause the fluid to exit the receptacle via the outlet port (49). The sensing system comprises a first sensor and a second sensor. The first sensor (82) is associated with the pressure member to sense its axial displacement. The second sensor (84) is associated with the interior of the receptacle (40) to sense in a non-contact manner the pressure P of the inflation fluid within the receptacle (40), and to provide a corresponding data signal. The data processing and display unit is adapted to process the signal and display at least a scheme of pressure P within the receptacle vs. the volume V of the inflation fluid exiting the receptacle through the inlet/outlet port. The volume is calculated by the axial displacement of the pressure member. The scheme reflects the corresponding P-V conditions within the balloon when the system is in use.

    • A guidewire occlusion system for use in vascular procedures includes a repeatably inflatable gas-filled occlusive device proximate a distal end of a tubular guidewire assembly having an extended sealable section proximate a proximal end. A gas inflation/evacutation system is removably connectable to the proximal end of the guidewire assembly and includes an evacuation system to evacuate aire from the guidewire and an inflation system for introducing a gas under pressure into the guidewire to inflate the occlusive balloon a plurality of times. A sealing system is also removably connectable to the proximal end of the guidewire assembly and selectively seals the extended sealable section at one of a plurality of separate locations along the extended sealable section to form an airtight seal of the tubular guidewire. Eacht ime a deflation of the occlusive device is desired to reestablish blood flow to the vessel downstream of the occlusive device, the extended sealable section is opened distal to the location of the last seal toquickly deflate the occlusive device.

    • An electronically controlled syringe system (14) for connection to a balloon catheter (10) or other balloon-type member and for automatically monitoring, displaying and recording inflation data when the syringe system (14) is used to inflate the balloon catheter (10) or other balloon-type member. A syringe (16) having a barrel (22) and a syringe plunger (24) is selectively operable to increase fluid pressure applied to the balloon catheter (10) or other balloon member by sliding the plunger (24) further into the barrel (22). Positive pressure applied to the balloon catheter (10) or member can be released by withdrawing the syringe plunger (24) toward the rear of the barrel (22). A piezoresistive semiconductor transducer (18) housed on the barrel (22) of the syringe (16) senses positive fluid pressure applied by the syringe (16). The electric signal output by the transducer (18) is input to a controller (20) where the signal is digitally processed so as to derive and record therefrom electronic data representing the magnitude of applied fluid pressure, and so as also to derive the length of time that positive fluid pressure is applied and the electronic data representing this information is automatically displayed and recorded. The controller (20) is also programmable to permit optional selection and input of various control parameters, such as a maximum positive inflation pressure that is to be applied, maximum duration for applying positive inflation pressure, initialization of the date and time of an inflation procedure and/or retrieving and displaying inflation data previously recorded for any prior inflation of the balloon catheter (10) or other balloon member.
