    • A utility distribution system is provided for modular furniture of the type comprising individual furniture units (3) which are juxtaposed to form one or more workstations. A signal conductor (5) is positioned in each furniture unit, and extends generally between opposite sides thereof. Quick-disconnect connectors (7) are provided at the opposite ends of each of the signal conductors, and mate with like quickdisconnect connectors in adjacent furniture units to create a communications network through the workstations. Each furniture unit has a signaler (9) physically associated therewith, which is connected with an associated signal conductor at a coupler (10). A network controller (11) is operably connected to the network to evaluate the network and/or the associated furniture units. The furniture units may be equipped with one or more utility ports (12) which are connected with the coupler, and service utility appliances, such as personal computers (13), telephones (14), facsimile machines (15) switches (27), power outlets (25), data receptacles (26) and the like. The utility appliances preferably have memory capability to internally store operating instructions for the same, which are transmitted to the network controller when the utility appliance is initialized.

    • An armrest structure includes a support (136) and a body (138) rotatably mounted on the support (136). The support (136) includes a pair of protrusions (40) and the body (138) includes a notched channel (44) for receiving the protrusions (40). By rotating the body (138) on the support (136), the protrusions (40) are repositioned in the notched channel (44) between selected stable use positions. The notches (44) are located on both sides of the channel such that the body (38) can be located in a first position with the first surface (114) on the body (38) facing generally upwardly for use, and a second position with the second surface (116) on the body (38) facing generally upwardly for use. By varying the surfaces (114,116) on the body, and also the engagement of the protrusion (40) with the notched channel (44), various spatial positions and functional surfaces can be selectively positioned for use.

    • A lock and interlock mechanism for file cabinets, desks, storage units and the like includes an elongated channel (44;222) which receives a plurality of elongated lock bars (32;244) in a vertically stacked relationship. A plurality of cam actuators (34;250) are selectively positionable adjacent the elongated channel. Each actuator is pivotally mounted for movement from a first to a second position upon opening movement of a cabinet drawer. The actuators each define cam portions (92,94;256) adapted to engage one of the lock bars and shift it vertically. When one of the actuators is in the second or operative position, the remaining actuators may not be moved or are blocked from movement to their second positions. A detent arrangement (74,98) on the actuator and lock bars holds each actuator in its second position in a detent type fashion. A control member (122;264) is mountable on a drawer or drawer guide mechanism to pivot the actuator between its first and second positions. A lock (150) includes a bar (154) and wedge (158) movable into the channel to prevent movement of the lock bars. This prevents opening of all of the drawers.
